Texas

Where I'm at its not supposta get below freezing. I think its showing low at night of 34. But I'm somewhat ready! Got my heat lamps out for the babies that went out Christmas week. If need be I can move some back into the garage. Those I'm worried about are the OEGB. Its their first winter. I don't think its going to be a problem as we don't stay in the near freezing zone for long. *crosses fingers*
Expected to be 29°F for the low on Sunday but it will probably be a couple to 3° lower! In 2021, didn't think it would be that bad....wasn't prepared at all. Thought the weatherman was just trying to scare everyone....cause it usually isn't that bad, 1 day maybe 2 at the most we have below freezing temps and even then the water doesn't freeze in the waterers or the pipes in the well house, or out door faucets. I really paid for that screw up!

I was wondering if it’s ok for me to leave my nipple water out? I know if its too cold during the day I’ll have to give them another water source, but im just worried about the nipples getting messed up. Do they crack? Can I leave my nipple water out all winter and it not get messed up? This is my first winter with the new waterer. I’ve had an open one for years.

Planning on doing some extra winterizing tomorrow. Will likely bring my tiny flock of 3 hens into the barn where I have a secondary coop/run setup, since windchill will probably be the game-changer. We learned from the Big Freeze 2021 and put heat tape on lots of water pipes esp. in the barn. "Precip" in some form or another is in our forecast for Thursday. We'll see if ERCOT hides their head in the sand again on this one :hmm

Is everyone ready for this coming next week cold spell? For once in a long time I'm prepared for the onslaught we're probably going to get!
Yeah buddy! Generator is good to go, propane tanks are full, cantry is loaded! Do I like the cold, hell no, but we're ready.

I also have the last DNA Sexed BQ Blue Partridge Pullet (2 months old). Gorgeous fully feathering foot. 5 correct toes as well. DM if interested!

Anyone else can't help but start thinking of ideas for warm meals... for the chickens?

Got some leftover rice, thinking of making some oatmeal, too.
Got down to 27 the last couple nights. Waters haven't frozen but I added a touch of warm water to the trough just so they're not drinking ice cold water. I also have been setting a flock block out there for them. I normally don't give scratch with corn and stuff in it but figured they could use the extra calories this time of year.

Edited to add: coldest day of the year yesterday and I got 10 eggs out of 10 pullets so I guess they're unaffected!
