Ouch! I'd like to say I'm glad it wasn't the AC that broke in the middle of August this timing isn't much better with possible snow and lows in the mid 20s coming.

I've done three winter with no central heat. We have three space heaters we use if the house is going to get below 68degrees. If the AC had gone out no dice we would have just gone with the central unit right then. I've spent weeks on end because of hurricanes with no AC. Its no go for me or the house.

Granted I knew about this one. I gave her three or four eggs to hatch and well I think I got ten babies >.<.

So one of the babies from this hatch is a week old and is already trying to crow. Just wow.

We use space heaters most of the time. I hate the central heat. It dries the house out so bad that my nose bleeds. We use the central air though.

For the 89th Texas Legislature Senate Bill 141 (SB141) has been introduced. This is another attempt to limit HOAs from regulating the raising or keeping of chickens. Hopefully this can get passed this session and we can have our chickens, especially with the prices of eggs skyrocketing. Tonight I went to Costco and they have no eggs at all.

Random question for my Texas folks... we had our heater break (3 out of 4 coils burnt out) and the AC/heater is almost 20 years old. Is 14k reasonable for a total replacement including some new ducting? (this older house has ducting going to no where and no ducts where we need it).

They seem like an honest family run company, licensed and insured and good reviews for 20 yrs of business.. but that's a crazy amount of money! Is this normal or are we getting scammed?!

About a year ago, I replaced one of my central air units for a bit more than that and there was minimal duct work required. It really depends on where you live, unit efficiency, size, etc.
Based on my own research, I'd highly recommend springing for a 2-stage over a 1-stage system. The variable speed systems are definitely comfortable, but will likely cost more in the long run. They're a lot more complicated and more likely to have issues and a lot of those costs likely won't be covered under warranty.
Double check with your electric/gas companies on rebates and be sure to include the costs with your tax return.

Always get multiple bids for HVAC work. Sometimes they get busy and give you the "I don't really want to do this job" price. Even the good ones.

Very helpful! Thank you! I got another bid and they quoted me over 16k... waiting on a 3rd company. I'll do some research on 2 vs 1 stage systems. I also recently learned about SEER rating.. by the end of this, I'll be an AC expert. Ha!

Either way, we won't get it fixed before this freeze on Mon-Tues. Stocking up on firewood and getting space heaters. Chickens are on their own but they've got wind blocks.
