You have to remember there are two "types" of turkeys
broad breasted white or broad breasted bronze (which are basically the cornish cross of the turkey world) and heritage. I raise heritage turkeys..
Broad breasted white are what you will usually find in the grocery store at thanksgiving

the main thing to remember with turkeys is that a wet cold turkey poult will become a dead turkey poult VERY quickly,. I don't allow mine on the ground until they are feathered out since they are very susceptible to chilling. Lol.. ever heard the old saying about how someone lost a whole flock of turkeys because they were so dumb that when it rained and they looked up and then drowned?.. it wasn't drowning that killed them.. it was getting wet then chilled.

Also some people have problems with blackhead (a disease that turkeys can contract).. usually chickens would be the carriers.. however if blackhead is not an issue in your area then you don't have to worry about it. Best way to find out is to check with your county's ag department.. mine here had no clue what blackhead was.. and had no records of it on the books for where i live

Lol.. there's alot more to know than just that.. they should also be fed a higher protein food or at least one that has plenty of niacin. (gamebird starter is great for them) Like waterfowl, turkeys can develop leg issues if they don't have enough niacin in their feed,

For shipped poults I add some electrolyte powder plus some brown sugar to their water for the first few days (they do need room temp or warm water when you receive them). Steal some of your kid's marbles or go buy some.. you will need to add them to the feeder and waterer to entice them to peck at it.. if you cant find marbles see if you can find some of those glass "half marbles" that they put into vases for holding flowers upright.. if all else fails you can add some chopped greens to their food and float a bit on their water. The marbles do work much better though.. Turkey poults don't peck at food or drink water as quickly as chickens do... so you need something that will get their attention to entice them to peck at their food and water or they will lay down and die from starvation / dehydration even though the food and water is right there
You can also add a few chicks to the same brooder with the turkeys to help teach them to eat.. but i would still add the shiny marbles for any slow learners just in case

I am wanting to raise a couple of turkeys for next Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Which ones taste better, the white or bronze, and how long do they take to grow out?
