i HAD some chayote growing.. then we had a hard frost the other night...

i don't think they survived...

My rosemary died....thankfully, my LFS had some in stock when I stopped by, today - so I get to replace it. Otherwise, my garden is on hold until all my coops and runs are built - pretty much because the runs on either side of the garden actually form the garden. Gates on each end. Have to - the deer won't let anything grow otherwise.

I was joking before about emu being "dinosaurs"... so today I took a pic of the claw at the end of one of Paco's wings..

yeah.. we have velociraptors...

Thanks. I have only had one mess of greens all year. The chickens get almost all of them. Burns my wife up. They even like the onions.

We get wild onions first thing in the spring, and I love to cook them into omelets. That is, I did until the chickens started eating them all! I couldn't figure out why they were so late in the year until I realized they were there, just cropped really low. Of course they won't eat the mustard garlic,but I imagine the eggs might start tasting weird if they did.

Ouch, can those things actually rip something and do they use it for defense?

That is fascinating! Reminds me of the archaeopteryx fossils.

fortunately no.. their wings are pretty much useless

their toenails are razor sharp though.. and they WILL use them with no problems

yeah.. it is pretty cool.. most of the time you don't even notice their wings because the emu are so darn fluffy

I find all the Ratites fascinating, especially the extinct ones - Moa from New Zealand and the giant Haast's eagle that hunted them. Can you imagine being the first human to see this?!

yeah I had Rosemary and Sage (which also LOVES Texas - esp Texas limestone areas) at my house in S. Austin. They were taller than I am. Love 'em.
