I haz a question. I picked up my nest boxes yesterday. They are cumberland 12 hole metal nesting boxes that hare connected back to back and the eggs roll out into the middle for collection. I only need six of them so I am cutting it in half and selling the other half. They are used, so I was wondering, what should i use to clean them? Bleach water solution? Also what size nesting box should I use for these breeds: Brahmas, turkens, dominiques, black star, black minorca, egyptian fayoumis, leghorn, rhode island red, wyandotte, araucana, americana, orpingtons, silkies, and faverolles? I know that I will probably have to have another nest box on the ground for the silkies, or put the nesting boxes closer to the ground, but how big should the nest boxes be for the rest? I might need to turn two boxes into one or something perhaps?

What is this "Spring" of which you speak?

i have a few of the breeds you named and i am using a milk crate for a nest box.... they all seem to do fine and no problems have arrised with that setup... for my silkie im using a 25# tidycat litter tub on the ground... she also layed in the milk crate when she was in the big pen with everyone else.... its aboot 18-20 in off the ground...

from the looks of things so far, i may be in the market for for a EE cockeral. does anyone in the houston area have any growing out at the moment?

Hey thanks for all the soil conditioning tips, keep em coming. I am also wondering what the specifics are with a septic system. I've always been on a sewer system. This one uses treated grey water for the lawn. Would this make it unsafe to plant an edible garden nearby?

PS I love the silver hens being offered, so pretty & I am jealous of the gorgeous horses too.

PPS it is snowing here and supposed to start sticking soon.... Ugh! I would welcome one day of summer right about now.

We have aerobic septic in our subdivision. Because we are not out in the county we have pretty strict rules. You are supposed to be inspected regularly and maintain the system with a septic contractor. The grey water lines have to be 25' off the property lines. Most folks use them on lawn areas that aren't actively used. We treat the greywater tank with chlorine tablets. If you don't it is smelly and not nice to be around. From a health perspective - NO you would not want it spraying an edible area.

Whew! Did someone wish for Summer? Lets do Spring first.

I think Spring came two weeks ago LOL. I had to come inside for a bit because I was getting to warm....it is still March yet feels like beginning of June. My ducks don't even want to swim right now. Everyone is wanting to sit in the shade. We are going to be in for one hot summer.

I guess I picked a good day to start my seedlings for the herb garden. Tomorrow I think I will start the seedlings for the vegetable garden. My chickens loved the cucumbers and snow peas last year. I might just grow a vine or two just for them.
