SO I called mc murray and changed my order.

DH sighed and shook his head but allowed me to do it. I changed my order to 25 chicks. I figured that gives me some wiggle room, and I can sell the ones I want to part with when they get older if I do not wish to keep them in the flock, or they can go to freezer camp. =) My order is as follows:

I know I am crazy but I don't care!!! ... chicken math hit man xD

Also I picked up a 3.5 month old Silver laced wyandotte today since the gold laces and silver laced on my order list are for my vet. She seemed to do OK with my hen and roo, but I put her in a dog crate anyway to be able to see them, but not get bullied by them. Sunday I will let her out with them and they can interact with each other during supervised time. Her name is Dutches. x3 She has nice lacing so far.

uhm.. Kili wasn't kidding..... you CAN use brains.. some people prefer that method (it was one of the original methods before they came out with nice prepackaged kits).. i don't normally suggest it though because some people can get a bit... weird.. at the mention of using brains to tan hides
I did not know that o 3o Maybe I shall try that one. No harm can be done anyway. My neighbors think i am weird already, so how much worse could it get?
chicks that hatched out last weeek

dorkings, bresse, jersey giant, maran and euskal oiloa

meant to post these the other day.. but I got busy and forgot

D'aaaaw, they are simply adorable!
I checked the rain gauge this morning and we got between 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of rain. It was so wonderful smelling that rain comeing. The lightning was nice to especially knowing it wasn't going to start any fires when it hit ground. We got to much rain for that thank goodness. I hope for more rain and a fire free summer.

I let the older girls out of the chicken yard after we mowed yesterday. They had a blast bug hunting.

I finally got my Amerucanas to be still enough to get a decent picture of them.

They are simply gorgeous girls! I can't wait to get some in the future!
Our mail lady made a special trip to get our chicks to us this morning. Our mail comes about 3:00 but she came by at 8:00 this morning. I gave her a dozen eggs and her eyes bugged out. Some adults have never seen blue and dark brown eggs before. I love it when they see them for the first time.

*grabby hands* I want

Georgetown Farm Supply on 29 has been selling out of chicks within 48 hours of receiving them...it's the all the Easter crap, right now. Chicks disappear like mad...and, in a week or two, CL will be swamped with people wanting to dump them.
I know what you mean. I can't get into tractor supply fast enough. By the time I get there all they have is a few ducklings left. No chicks.

That is why I gave up and just sent in an order. Easier, and I could pick some breeds I wanted, without having to order 5 each.

Ohh ur getting a creve! I think they look awesome! When are they due to arrive?

Wondering if y'all would give me some advice introducing my new hens to my rooster. We had two hens before he got here and when we brought him home they got along well. When we tried to introduce the new ones he immediately attacked. I currently have him locked in a smaller pen within the big pen, where he will be able to see the girls but not get to them. How long does it usually take for them to adjust to one another? On a side note, not sure if it makes a difference, but when we got him we didn't have any babies in the coop and we finally moved them out there so for the past several weeks it's just been him roaming the big pen and the babies roaming the "holding" pen. Not sure if he was just trying to protect the youngsters or what but am I in danger of him harming my girls or will he get used to them and realize they are for him? Btw the other two hens died which is why we got some more, and he was trying to mate with my young turkey.

LONG story short..

basically my ducks promised Kilsharion some eggs for baking (I know they did.. i heard them ..).. then when I started collecting the ducks went on strike.. for the ENTIRE week.. not a single egg was laid by any of the giant pekins, muscovy or cayugas...
so she had to make due with some goat milk, half dozen turkey eggs for baking and about 2 dozen chicken eggs (which I heard made some awesome deviled eggs

)

lol.. i still need to butcher a few turkeys for her for the next meet up! (hopefully some of the darn ducks will still be laying.. I just won't tell them about the meet up before hand)

I am actually having the same problem. My slw I just got seems fine with my faverolle pullet, but my cockerel is attacking her. The slw is staying in a dog kennel in the coop till sunday when I can supervise them. If he is the only one causing problems I might switch them and put my roo in the crate to cool off.

like big chicken eggs!

they are a bit "firmer'.. but taste wise I really don't see any difference between any of the eggs

When we have to switch chickens around/put new ones in, we do it after dark.

Last night we played chicken-basket-upset moving some girls in with solitary roosters, putting some roosters together in a bachelor house, and putting new roosters into a house with another group of females. We waited till it was dark, snatched them off their roosts, then put them in their new digs. With it being dark, they can't see to harass each other very well and then they just wake up next to each other going "Who are you and where are we?".

There is still a pecking order that has to be established, but this works a lot better than putting them together when they can see each other immediately to start bothering with each other.

We also put the more timid/laid back chickens into the houses FIRST. Even if we have to take everyone out for a bit, put in the mellow chicken, then put the other chickens back in. That way, when we introduce the more dominant chickens, even though it is dark, they realize that someone is in the house first and they are being brought in to someone else's territory.

Although I have not had to use them - yet - I also got some peepers to slap on chickens just in case more intervention is needed.
