Texas

yup.. and pet snakes and certain lizard types love those splay legged chicks or quail culls!

I knew a guy who had falcons and owls (yes, he was licensed).. he raised chickens and rabbits just for his birds to eat

Now you have done it.....Sarge was thinking about getting into falconry.

He will want this guy's name.

1 more hour till quitting time, then 1+ hour of drive time...then i can get home and attempt to get some work done on my outside brooder/growout pen!!! really need time to fly and the sun to stay up!

Just thought I would note on here, that my DH and I are looking for a room mate to help defray some of our costs while we save up. We have a spare bedroom but you would be living in the middle of nowhere. I have let other places that I hang out know but I just realized that on here I wouldn't have to post and worry that someone wouldn't like our chickens! LOL Shoot me a pm if anyone is interested in renting our spare bedroom (though I would need a heads up because that is the brooder room right now and I doubt you would want to share that space with a bunch of chicks... hehehe)

it's the thrill of the chase that hooks them.. not the taste of blood
one of my LGDs will lay with the birds all day long and never touch one.. but as soon as we butcher birds she's standing there wagging her tail looking for a piece of liver or the heart. She LOVES the meat.. but she would never think of killing her "babies"

One of the cattle dogs is another matter. She's fine so long as the birds are where they belong.. but if a bird escapes and is out and about in the yard it's game on.. she tries to herd it.. then chase it.. the prey drive is very strong with her breeding.. and if she manages to CATCH the bird.. well.. you better be faster than she is.. So long as the bird stays where it belongs she's fine and will ignore them

yup.. free roosters.. old worn out layer hens.. free ducks.. you name it.. just make sure the free birds never ever come in contact with your flock (risk of birds spreading disease to your birds) so quarantine them if you won't be butchering them for a few days

we pluck the birds and wash them off.. I prefer to gut them because i am parting them out anyway.. other people don't bother (and my dachshund has decided that smelly guts are fun to roll in...

)

I remove the heads because I want the skulls!
I grind up the feet along with the bones.. but with one dog you shouldn't have an issue with him trying to inhale the bird before someone else does so depending on how much he will eat at a time you can cut off the feet for later or leave them on

My aunt started me on using the extra birds for dog food.. the thing she does differently is that once she kills and plucks.. she rinses them with vinegar and water or lemon juice and water.. so it doesn't smell as much like "chicken"... I never saw where that matters.. but she swears by it
I think I would like to gut them... just because i think it would be a little cleaner. I will leave the heart, lungs, and liver. But the rest I think will go. Don't want to feed my dog wastes form teh chicken.... You think I would have a problem feeding multiple dogs if I feed them separately or in their kennels. With raw feeding I don't want to leave their food down for them... don't want it to spoil.

I grind up the bones (and feet) fat, skin.. and if I feel like it I toss the meat in there too... it just makes life easier when feeding multiple dogs

with just one dog you don't even need to grind the bones.. whole raw chicken bones are fine.. the problem comes when they are cooked ... cooking will cause them to splinter. BUT you can also grind up cooked bones to make them safer..

as a note: you really don't want to add more bone to the meat then there is in the bird.. otherwise you can throw off the calcium ratio in the food.
So how many lbs do you think I should feed a 85-95 lbs german shepherd a day? Do I have to start him on chicken, or can I do beef as well since that is what me and my husband get often. I actually have some chicken in the freezer right now too...
good to know! so you just grind it into almost like a chum for sharks? or am i just imagining it being gooier than it really is?

Yukon Men has me picturing the slop they feed their sled dogs from their fish! lol!
Is it ok to have whole fish? I would think the little bones would cause a problem, or is that not the case with raw fish?

Man, if I could take the extra hour drive to work, I would do it. Trust me. It would just eat me and DH alive with gasoline. He works in dallas, i work in grand prairie/cedar hill. I wouldn't have minded living with the lil chicks

Sorry for the late reply. Just started reading the harry potter books. I am at page 111 in about an hour's worth of reading I think. It is a pretty good book. I got bored when i was little reading it. DH's dog hasn't gotten out of the yard today. So I am going to go ahead and risk it tomorrow and let him stay off his lead. See what happens. Hopefully he doesn't get out.

He works in Cleburne and I used to work in Burleson. We drive all the time, it's pretty much all highway. But I understand. Sometimes driving is a pain. But then again I was up in Joshua today to talk with a client for a dress and am currently sitting here in Cleburne waiting on one to show up to see if I can squeeze them into my dress making schedule. (5 bridesmaids dresses in two weeks, from Arlington, Grand Prairie, and one in Waco, yech) But it's an emergency so I will see what I can do.

I had 4 cows stolen from me. Texas rangers are involved. 3 are accounted for but the 4th is missing. Looking for a 4 year old Angus cow. No real distinguishing marks, but had a black tag in her left ear with number 11 in it. Last known whereabouts was Bleirberville, but we believe she maybe in Lexington, or Brenhum. These are show cows, and were leased to someone to show. If anyone has over heard anything or has any ideas etc please message me. The Angus cow is supposively at a vet in Brenhm.
That's terrible. I live near there. I don't know how you'd go about finding her with so many cows out in the field now. I really hope you find them all. Do we still hang cattle thieves in Texas?
