DH took the kids camping, so I have the night off. First time since my son was born that I have had a night to myself. So what am I doing???? Dishes, laundry, feeding the animals, but I LOVE IT! One night off is good, could not stand one more without my kids. But..... I am watching the Matrix Trilogy, drinking a vodka and sprite, and NO ONE is asking me "Mom, what is for dinner", "Mom, I am hungry", "Mom, can I play on your phone", "Mom, Mom, Mommy, Mommy". AND I am going to go to bed early and sleeping late!!!!! Sad what you come to with kids, LOL, would not change it for a second! I have to admit, I miss them, already called to make sure they are having fun.![]()
Just hope N. Korea does not strike tonight![]()
Just wondering why you lock them in? I read other people doing that also, I guess for predators? I come out pretty early sometimes and they are running around eating and drinking. My roos are crowing at 4:30 AM. I would try to give them access to food and water 24/7 but it seems like food and water in the coop would be a mess. All of my coops and runs are like one space each that is their coop and run.Yes. The run will connect to the coup, there is a gap at the moment cause im still working on it, but there is a door leading out to run from the coup that will be opened in the AM and closed in the evening. Tomorrow im adding roosts and going to rig the lid with hinges for my own access
PS all you girls that say you never want kids, YOU are the ones that should be having them, raise them to be respectful people. You at least have the common sense to know you would not make a good parent, which is what would make you a GREAT parent LOL! Yes, totally backwards. However, I would love my kids to be raised around yours, if you would have them.
I just want my kids to be raised with normal people not those that freak out if we have chickens, wow what the world has come to. My sister has paid about $800 for a Guinea pig because her daughter keeps dropping it and they can't let it die. If it can't walk and eat on it's one, do the right thing and put it down, but they don't want their daughter to have to have a pet die. Please sensible people have to have kids to balance this out!!!!![]()
Awesome. Thanks for the info. I've been out of time these last couple of days so I'm just reading it. We like bob whites. Good to know we need a liscence. I wonder why they make u do that. I'll have to look into it.My husband is with Ft Hood currently deployed to Afghanistan.. so welcome to the "neighborhood" lol
What kind of quail?
I raise coturnix (rebuilding my flock after the neighbor's darn dogs decimated the population)
different types of quail do better with different setups:
Bobs can be kept in large coops (I know of one fellow locally who lets his "free range" and they come back to his barn every night for feed and to roost.. not recommended ..but it works for him). They need teh most room of any of the quail since they are prone to cannibalism... in Texas you're also supposed to have a game bird breeder permit to keep Bobs..
Coturnix do better in rabbit cages or hutches where they can be kept up off the ground.. you can raise them in large coops as well.. but most people in the quail section of the forum will give you a bunch of grief over doing that. Hutches or cages do make it easier for egg collection.. but if you have a "lift open top" type of hutch be aware they can flush and fly right out of there when you open the top. No permit is needed for keeping Coturnix.
Buttons are better off kept in the house as "pets"
If you do go with a "coop" just try to keep it away from your chickens.. there are parasites they can pass back and forth which will kill quail pretty easily.. you'll also have to make sure it is covered with hardware cloth (at least the bottom few feet) to help prevent escapes.
just remember to feed them a high protein game bird starter (i feed it to mine from hatch to dispatch) and to keep them dry
Quote:
it's because Bobs are "native game birds"
Coturnix are imported..
