Texas

I would swear we have the same neighbors. When I work in the yard, they come and stand at the corner of their property in a wooded area and watch me. When my brother and I were building the pipe entry for my driveway he commented about them because they were hiding and watching us, so I explained that they watch me all the time and so he stood up and yelled "HOWDY! Come on over and help us with the fence." They took off and are better about not watching all the time. It would really creep me out but it is an older couple and they seem harmless, just odd.

Now that's funny! Makes you want to ask them if they would like a chair and some popcorn or a coke while they watch you work.

I waved to them in the beginning and it didn't help. I think they are just nosy. I am just glad that their property only has one tiny corner that is near the front corner of mine.

If you decide to try to live in a more rural area, when you look for an agent, look for one that is from a small town and/or is accustomed to showing non-suburban houses.

We had an agent recommended to us when we moved here and she was just awful. She didn't understand that we would rather live in a shack in the country than be stuck in a move-in ready house in a neighborhood where we were restricted on everything. All she wanted to do was show us houses that we couldn't afford and wouldn't want to live in anyway. When we insisted that she put a bid down on a house in the country (fixer-upper) she literally dumped us as clients because she didn't want us to buy the house - kept saying we would hate it and blame her. Fortunately a nice realtor from one of the small towns near the property understood us better and was more than happy to help us get country property and all the info for the area that we needed.

Most Texas appraisal districts are online also, so you can check out property taxes for houses you might be interested in.
This is very helpful, thank you. Luckily I have a few months before I move, so I think I can do it the right way as it were. I also unfortunately have to consider schools as I have a 4 & 5yr old. Anything that I should be warned about?

One piece of advice is be willing to commute just a little if you want the "perfect" place. Avoid HOA's, towns that are trying a little too hard to be ritzy and subdivisions. Try to get outside of the city limits of the area that you are looking to move to, less rules and nosy neighbors.

You guys are too funny. I think I have said about two words with my neighbors in the four years that I've lived here. I went and introduced myself when we moved in, threw a party, etc. - still don't know any of them. Except of course the people that live right next to us who seem to hate me for no good reason. Whatever! Their Loss! Aie ya yi. Sometimes us New Yorkers deserve our reputation for rudeness I guess.

I am more worried about being allowed to grow a big vegetable garden - must be the only person in Westchester county that grows okra - and have about 6 chickens. I'm not ready for the huge flock experience yet. I just don't want some helmet hair lady in a giant SUV telling me I can't plant peas and my dog is too big.

Oh and for those of you missing/wanting snow - come take mine!!!

the girls made a snowman but he melted a bit

This is our 9month old Bouvier des Flandres puppy - 75lbs & still growing

This is the backyard morning after - coop is on the right

One of my neighbors is great, has all kinds of animals, none of the others will even wave and the funny thing is I grew up 5 miles down the road from my house and they act like I am some stranger that moved into their neighborhood. Odd people in all areas of the country. Just smile and wave ans like I stated on another note " live outside the city limits".

THE SECOND SIGN NO TRESPASSING I OWN FIREARMS AND A BACKHOE. the other gate NO TRESPASSING ONLY THOSE WHOM BELIEVE IN REBIRTH SHOULD ENTER.
NO TRESPASSING YOUR IN IN RANGE OF ATTACK CHICKEN.

Most of the smaller school districts between DFW and Denton are good so you can find one of the smaller towns and live there. Flower Mound has a great school district, so does Coppell but it's hard to find property outside city limits within those school districts but it can be done. Avoid Lewisville ISD or Arlington ISD if possible. It's not that they're bad schools, just overcrowded.
