So cute of the chicks! I can't wait to get my chickens on Easter weekend! Do you think that having a big chicken like a road island red and a silky would be a bad idea?

i have 1 silkie in with the 2 EE's 3 BR's and 3 BA's and he/she is doing just fine! Started with 2 but one of them didnt quite make it the first week :(

here is a pic of him...he is so hatchery stock that the people in the silkie threads wont even comment on him!!

. So sweet! I was looking at pictures and videos on BYC last night and love how fun the silkies are but want some larger chickens as well. Just worried the big ones would pick on the little ones. I would not be happy about that! I'm planning on buying some 4-5 month old pulleys closed to laying as I'm impatient but want to buy some chicks for the kids at the same time for Easter. Do you think the age difference will work against the smaller breeds?

i think that if you raise them with the bigger guys they will assumer their order pretty well. i have no doubt that my silkie is pretty close to the bottom of the pecking order so far, but i dont see anything that would be considered picking on.

on a personal note though, i dont think i will be raising bantams and LF together any more if i can help it. i do plan on having a separate bantam pin so i can still have the little guys. the only reason i want to do it this way is i feel that the bantams will end up no the bottom of the pecking order no matter what...so i just would rather have them have their own hiearchy (sp)

Sorry, got busy outside. I'm not sure where all it was but there are people on both sides of the fence on this one. Whenever I do pick up my roos I hold and talk to them until they are calm but I don't pick them up just to hold them. I do do that with my hens though. I've heard both sides and keeping them in check makes since to me. Maybe it's a man/rooster thing. I feel the same about kids. I think too many people are friends instead of parents to their kids and they turn out obnoxious and mean like roos.
I've only had one mean roo and he was grown when I got him. First time he came at the grand kids he was gone.

I think people should do whatever fits the personality of themselves and their chickens.

Nothing snarky about you response. :)
it's every where on here. Lol. Just find a post about a mean rooster and you'll find those opinions. I'm on that side of the fence.. I had a RIR rooster who was TERRIBLE! Worst rooster I've ever had... My house dog couldn't even go outside without him attacking her. He would spot her across the yard and take off in a full sprint after her. He got after my 3 year old one day. That was the last straw. In my opinion, his problem was that I held and coddled him all his life. Therefore, he didn't respect me as "the head rooster". My blue Wyandotte rooster is absolutely wonderful. Does his job and has never looked at me crossways. He's also never been treated like a pet. But, that's just my opinion. To each their own. I know they are all different.

Woke up today to a damp patio and raindrops on my windshield. Unfortunately, I don't think we got much more than that. I want more rain!!! My horse pens are dust in the wind!

Also, one of my hens, Sandy, didn't show up for dinner last night. We scoured the yard, but couldn't find any evidence of foul play. I'm hoping she just shows up today. One of my best layers!!

We had thunder and lightning like crazy - no real rain. Stupid dog barked every time it flashed outside....so, yeah, not much sleep. Cranky as can be, today
