I still get terminology wrong.. back in my day they were "chickens".. they laid eggs then you ate them (the chickens and the eggs)
old.gif

now they have "chicken shows" and 'chicken diapers"... and "chicken TV" .. heck we were lucky if we had "chicken TV dinners"
makes my little brain cell hurt...

ima gonna go feed the wee beasties now.....

Just a quick hi to say how very, very amusing you guys have been! I love the Phyllis Diller pictures, the easter eggs all grown up, all of it! And the mini horses are to die for. So much cuteness!

Also on the German Shepherd front, I believe there is a woman outside of Houston that has Rin-Tin-Tin's blood lines going. I just finished reading susan Orlean's book on R-T-T which was fascinating if a bit long. I bet those genes are pretty good. Love GSD they are so beautiful. My "forever" dog that all future dogs will always be compared to was a white shepherd I found at a city shelter way back in 1992. He was the best dog ever.

Now the wild west coop town is making me think of other themes, like intenational landmarks. Eiffel Tower, Flat Iron Bldg, etc. I think the rule of thumb might be if it works for a mini golf course or Las Vegas, it could work for a chicken village. :)

if you ever get pics of them you need to post them....

What is birchen? Is that the funny gold silver color he has? What is an OEG? And I will keep you posted as far as how he grows up. Still not too sure about his brother. I've been told black australorp, but I don't know if they mature slowly. That is the problem. I'm not sure if Rascal (our colorful mystery bird) is maturing fast or if Fatty (my all black big bird) is maturing slow. Fatty is heavier, but Rascal had his comb, crow and interest in ladies long before I even knew if Fatty was male or female.

That sounds really neat. I was wanting to work with them to see if I can make the purple egg gene more predominant in a particular line. Since purple is my favorite color. I thought that would be perfect. I still haven't decided for sure. Two months ago it was black copper marans. I do know that when I do decide, I only get to choose one for at least 4 years... DH won't let me have as many birds as I would like.

Birchen is that colour there on his lower section. His head (hackles) are silver. His back (saddle) is birchen. OEG = Old English Game ...they were crossed here in American with Dorkings back in the day, and sometimes still are

It's why American Dorkings don't have quite the same colouration as the British Dorkings.

It's not fat as in he eats too much, it is weight. Fatty is a much heavier bird. He has always been the biggest of the bunch we got. His legs have always been the thickest as well. That was what really weirded us out when he was chick was that his legs were almost twice as big around as everyone elses. They are now as big around as my thumb!

ETA I wasn't offended by any posts. I am still trying to learn terminology so I may post things incorrectly. I want to learn so I will make mistakes along the way. Just correct me quickly so I don't make too much of a fool of myself. LOL

Ok - Dorkings are very slow to mature. Where most are crowing and going nuts by four to six months, it can take a Dorking up to nine months. Dorkings are also much larger and their legs are much more stout, tho short. They are very broad breasted and look boxy from the sides - called rectangular when they are being described. Like this:

Having four toes is a total DQ and a reason to cull; but, it doesn't mean that the bird isn't mostly Dorking. There are descendants of Dorkings called Favorelles that are all black. But, no hatchery I know of carries black Favorelles. They are extremely rare. HOWEVER...if you have an all black roo covering a silver Dorking hen...you will wind up with all black babies. And, if you got them from Ideal...their black Australorps are actually nearly show quality. At least, the ones I have. Beautiful, gorgeous green sheen. Nice comb (too many points; but...), lovely black legs, white soles, etc. They are a large bird as well, so if they crossed with a Dorking, you could wind up with an all black, four toed, slow to grow, large shanks, etc.

It's all guesswork - especially as I've not seen the bird...but...It's not unusual for hatchery birds to get themselves a little on the side from time to time...as my supposedly SLWs (silver laced wyandottes) bear witness:

Well, while Mike is going crazy getting the hotel up and going (he's been calling it Holiday Hen **groans** ), his table saw decided to die...so - who knows when it will be finished. For now, though, this is where he's at:

I hope y'all don't mind me posting updates...

No, I absolutely love the creativeness and workmanship. Keep at it. When's his birthday? Anniversary? Ah, Easter! Saws are really nice Easter gifts.

Awww, thanks, hon. Yeah, his birthday is in December and our anniversary is in September. So, I have to get creative. He's anti-religion so Easter/Ostara isn't an excuse...I'll use "full brooder and more coming" as an excuse....

He does great work...I'm so proud of him. And, he thinks of things...we're sitting out there tonight and he says, "I don't want to just put the tin on it. If I put some plywood up there and that thinsulate we have in the garage and then put the tin on, it will be much cooler in the summer." I swear, before he's done he's going to put insulation in the walls and actually finish it out on the inside.

Ok, that may be an exaggeration; but, I wouldn't be surprised!
