ok...so your basically cutting off the primaries just radial "thumb"(trying very hard to remember my anatomical directions)......which in laymans is the part of the buffalo wing that is discarded. i think i follow! for some reason i imagined pinioning being something more of stapling their wing closed and that just made me wonder! but that is great!! i am gonna go home and take a look at my baby chicks, got a couple that are less than a week old. Not that i plan on pinioning anything just yet, but will give me something to look at!

chickens will obviously be a good bit smaller, but should give me something to look at, right?

yup.. pretty much if it's poultry.. it has the same anatomy for the wing.. you can pinion chickens, ducks, turkeys, quail, pheasants, peafowl...

no point in trying an emu though.. their wings are useless.. and built a bit differently!

some people will claim it's cruel... but it's no different than removing a dew claw on a day old puppy.. a bit of a squeek and it's over.. no blood unless the bird is a few days old.. and even then it's barely a drop

looks like this one is gonna dodge me....

one of these days you need to post some pics of your EOs.. I love those silly birds.. I have a bunch of chicks now.. and I can't wait for them to grow up! (plus I NEEED some of your eggs as soon as I have room.. come on bator parts!!!)

Here is a photo.

We raised 17 Greenfire line EO's last year and two Skyline cockerels. Our flock is currently 6 Greenfire pullets with a Skyline cockerel. We have a back-up Greenfire cockerel that we are willing to rehome with one of the Greenfire pullets if you want a mature pair (we are only 45 minutes away). :)

The TX House and Senate is trying to pass Animal ID bills again to track animals.

While it is being billed for brucellosis tracking, the wording leaves it open for them to be able to require identification and tracking of any animal for any reason. Meaning people with animals, such as backyard chickens, could be forced to tag, keep meticulous records, and possibly even pay money just for the privilege of having laying hens in their backyard.

These bills were just filed last month and they are already trying to get pushed through. Which is really fast and makes me wonder who has what agenda going that they are getting this law pushed through so quickly.

I would urge everyone to contact their house and senate reps and tell them to vote AGAINST HB2311 and SB1233.

im waiting on the day myself! like i said before, i got flagged by IT because the firewall we run decided that all the little banners and adds are malicious threats....so now i use an entirely different browser(firefox) strictly for my BYC chitty-chats!

but i got galanie, chicklette, and littlewing not far from me! gonna start forcing us into sects i see...Little Wing has him a big bator now too!! BTW, hows that thing holding temps ken? might need to borrow the plans from ya if your works well. i think i want to build one instead of buying one....but who knows, lol!
The temps go from 98.8 to 100.3 . That averages out to 99.5. Right now humidity is 43%.
PLANS! What are those? It's pretty easy to build a cooler-bator. There are some nice ones in the learning center. I could put a sketch together with dimensions for a box if you want.
I got lucky having the hand dryer unit. It has a fan and heating element built in so that took care of 2 things in one. I just built a box to put it and the turners in. I was skeptical about the water heater thermostat not holding close temps but it seems to be working fine. I had to put a dimmer switch on the fan and heating element to calm them down. The fan will almost blow the eggs out of the turners if I turn it up all the way.

Finally have a full brooder -- the rest of my chicks arrived last week. We lost one chick (dominique) but she had been weak since she arrived and there were several times we thought she wouldn't make it. I don't know if something happened during incubation or hatching... sigh.

Here's everyone -- I'm paranoid we're going to have a surprise roo in the bunch!

6 total: 1 SF, 2 EE, 1 SLW, 1 RIR, 1 BPR
