this is true! i have an EE cockeral, that i got from Little Wing. then posted some pics of him and everyone was saying he was a pullet...then another week goes by and he became very much roo.

the mix breeds like those can hide the markers really well. i too have gotten some roos out of sexed chicks. 1 of my cuckoo marans is a roo out of the 3 i got. 1 of my polish is a roo out of the 2 i have, and 1 of my wyandottes is a roo out of the 3 pullets i purchased as well.

ii would say just go ahead and plan to make a rooster-pen if you have the room/means to do it! then you wont have to stress! roos wont begin to attempt to mate till 6+ months old in my experience so your hens can be safe for a while until you can seperate your girls. i have 5 roos in with 12 hens. my numbers dont add up either yet, but i will be making a rooster pen. and their pen will be simple. a protected area for the to roost and thats about it. no nest boxes are needed. heck, i might have some outdoor roosts for them too incase they want to sleep under the stars, wont be near as indepth as the coup for my layers,

OK.. that does actually make me feel soo much better! Thanks ya'll! I guess a roo pen it is!

Hatcheries call them ameraucanas.. They are an ameraucana cross tho which makes them EE's.

Just wanted to share this!

We moved our 10 babies into the grow out coop this weekend! They're about 4-5 weeks old, they aren't entirely feathered but with the heat I knew they'd do ok. They haven't had a heat lamp since I got them, it was so hot the week I got them we didn't need it (Our brooder was in the garage).

They seemed to really love it. They scratched the ground and ate the grass, and figured out how to use the ramp.

Here's a photo of the coop and run. (This is not their permanent coop, it's temporary while we build more on our other property, this would be way too small for all 10 of them)

Oh we also moved our other 16 older chickens to the pasture. I'm sure our neighbors are happy to not hear chicken noises today LOL! I wonder how long it will take them to notice they're gone :)

LOVE IT!!!! and awww Your babies are the same age as mine!

Wow! I'd love a grow out pen like that!

Well it started out as just our coop and run for our original 4 hens :) We spent a lot of money on building it, my husband built it from cedar. It's great. :) They free-ranged during the day, the run isn't big enough for 4 hens long term either, but it's good enough for rainy days and such.

When we got the chance to get a property we could have many more on, we built much cheaper (but still nice and safe) tractors and runs from reclaimed and donated lumber, and left this one at our house to use for temporary housing. After the summer it'll mostly be decorative lol.

i have some massive plywood server shipping crates i took from work. and looking at how you have only one open side really turned on a lightbulb for me!

Cool! Yeah I like how it protects them from the elements and still lets in a lot of fresh air, without a draft. Plus the hardware cloth can be expensive so if you already have wood, definitely a good move.
