On another note.. I am ONE inpatient mama today! My EE is jumping in and out of the nesting box for the first time since we got her (a week ago yesterday) I have had an egg eater so I am nervous.. I know if I stop checking she'll lay but darn it! I wanna see what color before someone eats it!

I'm anxiously awaiting mine to start laying too! I wasn't sure how old she was when I got her at the feed store, she was a lot bigger than my 3 day old chicks? Now I am thinking shes somewhere between 18-20 weeks, I run out every morning to check the nesting boxes!

I am so excited we have had 1 hen out of 15 laying for 9 days. The other 14 hadn't come along. Then yesterday, we went to check for eggs in one of the two large nesting boxes we have and our one hen who is laying didn't have an egg for us. She's already laying "medium" sized eggs and on her 4th day laid an extra large double yolker! WOW! Anyhow, we expected all the hens would lay in the same nesting box since that's what we hear from so many people. However, we checked the other nesting box and there were two baby eggs in there from two new layers!!! I am just glad they're using both nesting boxes!!!

I've been checking nest boxes for 6 weeks on three of mine. I have a BO and 2 BSLs that just turned 26 weeks and are still just barely reddened in the face! I will probably have the world's only "production" hens to wait 6+ months to start laying... Someone better start soon though because my DH threatened yesterday to start cooking some of them soon if they don't start earning their keep...

awww I will be the same way with our babies! Mine will be 12 weeks on Weds so still have a long time for them! How exciting for you!!! These are older gals (all but one who is a 6 month splash BLRW that hasn't started yet.. hopefully soon!) only the RIR has laid so far (she started 4 days after we got them) This is my Sassy girl... she is a lil odd shaped, dark colored EE with a tail that is huge and stands up like at a 90 degree angle.. hahaa.. the owner said she laid green eggs.. so I am dying to know what shade! hahaa Sadly she left again.. about the time the roo came in the house

I just hope she lays IN the nesting box and not like under the house or some odd place I can't see!

non chicken post- we have homeschooled and public schooled and had success at both. Listen to your kids and know what their personality needs at certain developmental stages. He now is a Jr in a very small 1A school and loves it. I have found teachers and coaches to be approachable, concerned and helpful.

I don't think that's a RANT, I think you are PASSIONATE about the subject. :)

Thank you!! The lack of education in the school is deplorable.

On another note: WE ARE GETTING RAIN!!! It isn't a lot, but I will take it.

Also, my Australorp hen after being broody for 2 long months is over it. She actually slept on the roost last night. YES!!

What's wrong with Texas schooling that so many would home school?

jajeanpierre, I homeschooled my two when I lived in Oklahoma and Indiana.  I will let someone from Texas tell you about their schools.  Schools in general do NOT teach the history of our country.  They do not teach the young ones the Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc.  Our kids today, do not know anything about America and why she is so great. The government is sticking their nose in on education where it does not belong.  Did you know that when the schools were started, it was suppose to be ran and funded by the parents?

Kids today are being taught everything but the 3 R's.  Teachers (there are good and bad ) spend a lot of their time coaching their students to pass the yearly tests.  Homeschooling is not for everyone. My dh and I chose to do this because we saw the way the schools were going.  No more discipline in the schools, unruly kids, teachers who didn't know anything, basic subjects weren't being taught, etc.

My family was horrified when we started teaching our two.  What about their friends?  What about their social skills?  Where is your license to teach?  When my two reached college, they couldn't believe how many kids didn't know how to study, let alone write a paper.  My daughter was taking college courses in the 10th grade.

Homeschooling is awesome!  I would do it again in a heartbeat.  I loved being with my two 7 days a week/365 days a year.

Sorry for the rant.    I guess you can say I am an advocate of homeschooling.

Lisa :)
