I was so glad no one was there to see it all go down the way it did. I had a sore bum for days!
Ha! I love it!!! That is a great story and I can totally see something like that happening to me.

...hmmmm. When you said THICK black snakes I thought Water Moccasin.

I found this site and thought it was pretty good:

Good site.. thanks! This guy was aggressive but so are the rats around here.. unlike the copperheads.

That was our first thought too! NO idea though.. after hubby was done with him I couldn't see much of his head or neck. This body was just huge! He was about the same length ( of 5') as the regular rats we get just just bigger around! Kinda odd looking really.. like his head part and tail were thinner yet his middle was chunky and thick. (no eggs though!) I did kind of see an eye which didn't have that cat eye look but we still aren't 100% sure. With the last one, it had tried to crawl into the yard when the boys were playing and my boxer totally went after it! He isn't the brightest so we thought if it was a cotton mouth, for sure he would have gotten bit that it had to be a black rat! Rather odd though.. 2 of these blacks and 23 regular rats? They must either not be from right here and are traveling or something! I haven't had any other issues telling the others apart.. well, maybe a bull and rat but don't think ya'll have bulls here, right? but these two.. wow NO idea! Guess I should have taken pics BEFORE hubby got a hold of him!

Thanks for the laughs! Oh too many snake stories! Is this normal for ya'll? I mean.. do you ever "get use to them" Between the snakes and scorpions.. well.. let's just say I wish Wyo wasn't so cold!

Back home, we would see bulls.. but let them be.. Diamond backs were here and there.. but only a couple would come close to the house during the summer.. my BIL did get bit which was rather freaky but he was out changing water in the field so... Between full moon hunting for scorpions and searching for snakes in the morning and night.. well, it's kind of hard to relax ya know!

My husband does refer to what he calls a Bull Moccasin. Also poisonous, but fatter and way more aggressive than your typical Water Moccasin. I wonder if that's what yours was. Did it have an awful stink to it? And NO! I have lived here all my life and am not used to it. In fact, I am getting decidedly more paranoid as I get older. And while you're fighting the scorpions and the snakes, don't forget to watch out for those nasty poisonous spiders. Brown recluses and black widows can do a lot of damage. And particularly with the black widows, the hotter and dryer it gets outside, the more they thrive.

I have NO idea! My nose is completely stuffed up right now with stinking allergies and hubby didn't say anything about a smell but that doesn't mean anything.. lol Sure hope it was just some ugly black rat!
Ugh.. although we had those in Cali when we lived there so I am always on the watch for them..they don't make me scream like the stinking scorpions and snakes! And I was NOT a screamer before we moved here!

Ugghhhh scorpions! I have been stung laying in bed, in the shower, had one in a boot.....I HATE those things, and its so dry right now they seem to be everywhere. I shudder just thinking about the darn things. I would rather shoot a snake any day. DH hates spiders with a passion, and kills em all, even the benign insect eaters. I think its a phobia, but he says he just hates em lol

The flock we watch over won't even come close to a dead snake! Even a smaller one. Now my flock has only seen babies.. which they happily found for me so I dunno how they would be with a bigger one.

All ya'll are cracking me up :lau I guess we've been lucky it's been 3-4 years since I've seen a rattler on our property, had a coral snake slither across the horse pen but thats been several years ago We used to see scorpions all the time but not too many now, although I have found 3 in the house over the last couple of months. I think we have so many outside cats & 2 inside cats that maybe they keep some of the critters away :idunno Now yellowjackets or another thing :barnie plenty of them everywhere
