Jungleexplorer, we may have all been born naked and illiterate, but many of us have a distinct advantage. Your mother made sure you could read, which meant she valued reading. The child born in poverty from parents who are illiterate and with a poor vocabulary has so many obstacles to overcome to ever be on equal footing to white middle class American children. I was born with a decided advantage--both my parents were university educated, which is unusual for people born in the 20s. It is not a matter of choice.
No, you do not have a distinct advantage, all the money in the world can not make someone a smarter, better or more caring person. Like what Jungleexplore said, we are born equal it is what we make of that, that makes the difference. We are all born with the equal opportunity to make our lives what we want them to be.

Every one has obstacles to overcome, they are all relative.

You are talking with a person that has lived most of their life with the very kind of people you are talking about. My wife is full blood Amazon Indian. She was born in the jungle and knew no other life then that of the jungle. She made the choice to marry me, the first person in the history of her tribe to marry an outsider. Today she can speak English like she was born in the US, drive cars, shops at Walmart with a credit card (now you know why I am poor) and if you did not know where she came from you would have no idea she was not born here. Her grandfather was born in stone age, before her tribe was ever contacted by the outside world. He was born in one of the most feared and murderous tribes in the Amazon. He went on to become a very powerful witchdoctor. When the first missionaries contacted their tribe in the 1940s he plotted to kill them. But instead he gave chose to give his life to Christ. He went on to learn how to read and write and became the High Chief of his whole nation. He changed the name of his tribe to a name that means Happy in his tongue and in his life he contacted 13 other stone age tribes and integrated them into his own tribe to form the largest tribe in the Amazon today. He establish a system of laws and government to rule his tribe and is still held has the most beloved and respected tribal leader to ever have lived in the Amazon by many other tribes and political leaders. You can read some of his life story in the book Christ Witchdoctor. I lived in this man's hut and hunted for him for several months while he taught me his native language so I could ask his grand-daughter to be my wife. He was the wisest man I have ever known. So please pardon me if I respectfully disagree with you about people not being born equal.

No, you do not have a distinct advantage, all the money in the world can not make someone a smarter, better or more caring person. I was born to a "poor" family. My mom worked 2 jobs just to keep us in a School District that was good. She sacrificed for us, we had to take that and run with it. I never went to college, yet I have a good job, that pays me well for the job I do and I bust my butt to make that that money. So do both of my sisters, they don't have a degree either. Like what Jungleexplore said, we are born equal it is what we make of that, that makes the difference. We are all born with the equal opportunity to make our lives what we want them to be.

I must not have made myself clear and I am probably not now, either. Because I--and many middle class kids--had parents who had a rich vocabulary and valued education, I was at a distinct advantage over a child born in poverty to uneducated parents who don't speak any language with depth or understanding. It is not about money, it is about the richness of language use when dealing with children from the time they are born. Research bears me out on this.

On top of that, there is the issue that teachers tend to be university educated and middle class. A child who speaks an inner-city dialect does not speak the same language as that teacher, nor do they share the same life experiences. The testimony of Treyvon Martin's friend on the witness stand was a perfect example of that. The dialect spoken by inner city kids follows rules and is a proper language--it just isn't the language of those in our society who hold all the power.

Success in life is not just about trying hard.

I think we all just need to calm the f*** down about education. There is no such thing as equal footing in education. Even people from the same social circles may have trouble with schooling. Let's not undermine anyone or anything.

Now that we've settled that, let's all just try and better education instead of talking about it. One day, I'll have kids and I hope that they have great opportunities. If a great education gives them that, all the better! I can try and do my part by supporting teachers, but I'm sure there is more we can do as a whole. Maybe forcing the state to recognize the abysmal state of public education would make waves. Anything is better than just sitting back and watching the books burn.

What a fascinating story! He wasn't a Yanomami was he?

Jungleexplorer, this is not what I am talking about at all, far from it. This is a completely different thing. In fact, I will wager that the stone age society is composed of far more intelligent individuals, on average, than the current American society. This isn't my hypothesis, by the way.

There is a dumbing down of humanity when it doesn't have to think hard about surviving. Survival in a stone age society is pretty tough. The more intelligent individuals will spend a lot of time thinking of how to make their survival easier and safer, watching and observing and noting patterns--that kind of a lifestyle favors intelligence. There are no safety nets for those who can't think or won't do unless the tribe is fairly well off. Those with the better problem-solving abilities will succeed and will be more likely to survive while individuals with poor problem-solving capabilities will have a much harder time of it and will tend not to reproduce as much.

There are something like 27 different words to describe snow in the Innuit language--that's a pretty rich language. We, on the other hand, are reducing our English language so it will become meaningless very soon and many people won't even notice. For example, there is a difference between the meaning of the words further and farther but I don't think many even know that.

I really shouldn't go here. I would have to do some research to get the facts right rather than remembering some report or paper I've read. I would need to cite the proper sources and I'm not going to.

I would love to hear more about our wife's transition from living in a stone age society to living in Texas. She must be an incredible woman. And very, very brave. She has my admiration.

Good Morning Texans!!!

Anyone getting rain? The ground is damp here, but nothing in the rain gauge. Hopefully that wasn't the 70% I am suppose to get today.

BOOM BOOM BOOM: Must be dove hunting season out today.

Today I heard my rooster trying to crow. It sounded like he was dying. Each attempt his voice got a little higher. The things I can hear now, totally amaze me.

Have a GREAT day!

Lisa :)

P.S. Mandy, call the post office. I hope your little ones weren't sitting in the office all night.

I love all you guys!

Italia, Revolution is a show that comes on NBC. The premise is that 10 years after an EMP caused by the US government knocked out all power, a group of people are trying to get the power back on. I think you might like it.

The Post Office called at 7am, and my babies are HERE! Post office opens at 8am, I will pick them up and the drop off my little man's cupcakes at school. He is 7 today!

They just got there this morning! I have not seen a dove yet this season that was actually in a legal place to shoot them. I loved listening to my roos try to crow, they sound like they are choking
