Maybe you can put them in little plexiglass boxes to protect them. Or install a narrow shelf (with a lip) in your kitchen to display them...high enough so the kiddos can't knock them down.


It was 57 degrees out this morning!! Fall is here peeps! With all of the rain my horse trough lettuce bed is sprouting! yippy!

Thanks for mentioning purslane. I had no idea it was such a healthy weed! I love it when people here share information of what is edible and how to prepare it. I grew up in the city, so unless it comes from a grocery store, it is considered poison until I find out otherwise. The other day my chickens found prickly pears and loved them. I would never have thought to offer them to them.

Chick weed is a good one for winter time.

Please ignore the dust, I dust once a week, but we have sand, and there is never any end in sight with the dust! I found those in some of the things my mom gave me. A lot of the things on those shelves are my grandparents or my husband's grandparents.

This was in there too. A picture of my great grandmother Sarah Arminta Crawford Shearer and my grandpa's sister Chloe. Guess chickens are in my blood.

So now you've got me thinking of a way to mount a propane tank on a lawnmower and how much it would use. Who knew that would be so simple? Used to be a small engine mechanic so that should be an absolute snap.

Here are some of the babies I've been busy hatching.
Silkies, Swedish flower hens, and jersey giants. Even my
Nigerian dwarf goat enjoys watching the little ones in the juvenile pen!

Oh goodness. I've got enough problems trying to find a place to sit with all the cats and dogs making themselves comfortable in chairs and on the couch. Don't know what I'd do if I had goats that did the same thing. Too funny!

You should learn to can while you're here - having prickly pear fruit year round is awesome. I haven't been able to go pick any this year, but when I do, I prefer it when it is nice and purple instead of green. You'll get a bite of it and sometimes it just has a fruity taste and other times it tastes like watermelon. I like canned in water as well as made into preserves, jelly, and jam.

LOVE THIS! I just love these old photos of everyday life. Don't worry about dust - you haven't seen my house. Fixer-upper, no central AC to help filter air, dogs tracking things in....I may as well live in an old soddy on the prairie.

That is a great old photo! I bet they were mighty proud of those birds, too!! Were they Leghorns? If I remember my history....white egg layers were a fancy bird, back in the day.
