I hope you get well soon, Zoo . Then you can tell us that your new feet helping you catching the chicken and you feel like the new 6 million dollar man .

Well my flock is going to be largely on thier own this winter. I have to have surgery on my rt foot in Nov. I've put it off as long as I could, now that things are slower at work, it's time. About half of the flock is free ranging now anyway, so I'll just open the gates on everything. I have a huge feeder that will hold at least 5 bags of feed and we have the water system hooked to a 55 gallon drum. I will keep the turkeys penned since they will eat themselves to death (not literally, I don 't think) and drive the chickens away from the feeder. I'm thinking I'll need to cull about half of the roos if I expect any of the valley to get any sleep too.
I will be in a Rocker boot and on crutches for at least 6 wks, then they will take a look at how it's healing and wean me off the crutches. This so sucks.
At least we don't have any real predator problems (at least right now). The dogs should keep that under control.
Looks like you've got things pretty well organized for your flock. Take care, and best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Oh heck, it's fine! I love baking for the sake of baking, really. If other people can enjoy it, it makes it worth it. I'm actually trying to figure out a way to donate a huge batch of rolls to Loaves & Fishes. I can't donate a lot of time to serve or clean up at the soup kitchen, but I can bake and have someone drop everything off for me. It would also force my brother to do something other than laze around. He needs to get in the spirit of giving this holiday season.

Besides, I have a couple days a week where I can have a cookie or a small slice of pumpkin bread. That and a talk glass of icy cold milk and I'm free of cravings, haha! So send away and if I can't enjoy it, rest assured that my family will! :)

By the way, I tried my hand at making flour tortillas for the first time in years. They were perfect! Even my picky father (whose mother makes the best tortillas) thought they were great. I'm pretty psyched about that. I indulged in one this morning, hehe! :D

Tortillas are much harder to make than it seems!! I use safflower oil instead of lard or shortening. What do you use?

...and what does your grandmother use????

I'm not sure what Grandma uses, though I'd assume lard. She doesn't cook them as much anymore. What I do know is that Dad used to trade his bean tacos for chorizo/egg when they worked in the fields because the other pickers knew that Grandma made the best flour tortillas. Dad would trade up, haha!

I used shortening because that was what was recommended to me. I also just used my hands because I wanted to make sure the texture was right. It all worked out and they were flexible and delicious. Part of me wants to make the "sweet" tortillas my sister makes, so I'm going to try that later. They are just a hint sweeter than the ones I made and are meant to be eaten plain. Mmmm, I can't wait to try it out. I'll have to make a new batch of normal tortillas, though. Nobody else seems to like the sweet ones, hmph.
