Texas

Heck, ours do that anyway without light. I was up really late a couple of weeks ago and the living room window was open - there was crowing going on from multiple pens at 0330. All I could do was just shake my head at our weird chickens.

The idea that roosters crow because of light or the sun coming up is a myth. They crow because of their massive ego! LOL! They will crow at anything that dares makes a sound at night. If the dog barks, they will crow. If sparrow chirps, they will crow. Basically, they see everything that makes a sound as a challenge to their rule and authority and they feel they have to out crow it to make sure that everyone knows that they are the boss. About the only way to keep them from crowing is to put ear plugs on them so that they can't hear. My dad actually did this one time when I was a kid. No joke!

What a stink...I'm so disappointed

just look how messed up these remaining eggs are UGH!!

Don't wash them! Just incubate them the way they are. I am sorry to see this. I wish everybody would adopt my wrapping system. I shipped over a 1000 eggs this spring and not one was broke. What breed of wheaten did you order?

Hey guys and gals from gilmer tx looking to purchase some start off layers and was wondering what a good breed for my area would be looking for possibly threes hens and a roost all the help would be great thanks
Howdy and Welcome aboard!!! That is a dangerous thing to say on this forum. We have LOTS of enablers on here. :)

I've got a ready made flock to-go. 2 layers, one Rhode Island Red and one barred rock. 2 frizzled bantam pullets (I think) 12 wks old. And 1 blue Maran roo, 14 wks old. I'm in new Braunfels.

No. The rooster just scratched the earmuffs off. The rooster decided to roost outside my dad's bedroom window and my dad did not care much for roosters crowing at night. He ended up being soup. My dad did try though. He made a little hood so he could not see light. That did not work. He made the ear muffs for him. That did not work. He made a muzzle for him. He still crowed while muzzled (funniest thing you ever heard!

). He tied a rope to his roost that went to his bed where he could shake him off the roost if he crowed. The dumb bird just would not learn.

Ha! Yep. We were up late last Friday night after a football game (my husband is a coach) and so our outside lights were on way later than normal. Subsequently, the roosters were going off all the way until about 1:30am. Ugh! The new barn is being built across the pasture, but their temporary pen is literally on the other side of the bedroom wall. If you could imagine the wall not being there, I sleep less than 3 feet from 40 chickens (7 of which are crowers). I LOVE them waking me up in the morning, but 1:30am had me thinking about chicken dinners...
LOL - funny how when they are annoying or even get snarky and attack you that suddenly the thought of chicken dinner doesn't sound so horrible!

I will be in a Rocker boot and on crutches for at least 6 wks, then they will take a look at how it's healing and wean me off the crutches. This so sucks.

I've spent some time in those boots. Since my feeding partner is 80 years old, I can't leave it all for him, so I got a garbage bag and put it over the boot, then made a "frame" of duck tape along the bottom and sides of the boot - kinda making it a shoe. Made it easy to take on and off when I needed to go to the barn and kept the boot dry. Just slip the boot into the "shoe" and wrap the upper plastic of the bag around your calf and tie with a short bungie. Quick and easy.

I think I know why we haven't had many eggs!

We've been getting only about 3 eggs a week, all from the same hen. We've had two broody hens that I've been trying to break and they have been in the nesting boxes for weeks. Well, I finally caved and placed them in the broody breaker cage.

When I went back to the nesting boxes to clean up, two hens were in the boxes, waiting to lay! Who knew that broody hens could prevent other hens from laying eggs, because I sure didn't!

Now, I'm off to make lunch. I've been flooding the yard (well water, woot!) and capturing roosters to get them plump and ready for sale/eating. I've only caught 4 but I'm pretty sure I have about 5 more to capture. We are keeping four (more like 3, because Rizzo the Frizzle doesn't count, haha!). I am starving!
