Good morning Texas! All the new babies are so very adorable!! Keep the pics coming! I doubt I will ever venture into the chick dept
Never say never!! It is obvious we Texans have fallen down on our job of enabling!! Hang in there and we will get you going!

JaJeanPierre: I just listened to the different birds. That brought tears to my eyes. I am a cochlear implant recipient and am still amazed at the sounds I hear!

Have a GREAT day!!

Lisa :)

This is what killed one of our grown game hens last year

it's a medium size hawk.......
I think this is a juvenile Red tailed hawk. See the belly band of color--white chest, band of streaking, white leggings--that's very typical for Red Tails. Not all red tails have that belly band but most do. I think juvenile because the tail is light brown and banded, not red. If you think it was small for a typical red tail, it is probably a male. Females of all birds of prey are substantially larger than males, by about 30%. A small male red tailed hawk could weigh a little less than 700 grams (1.5 pounds). Compare that to a large female at 1460 grams, or 3.2 pounds--huge difference in the same species.

When did you see this bird? Predators learn which animals are prey, and obviously this one knows your chickens are edible so will come back. That you could get close enough to get a picture suggests that it was a very desperate bird. Not very many juvenile birds make it through the winter. Starvation kills most of them, although they do eat carrion and there are an awful lot of dead deer around Texas.

It is chilly this morning! So glad this is the last cold morning for a few days.

Going to ride my 6,000 mile for the year today!!

I have so much I want/need to do but I also have to work. :(

I found this neat idea and thought I would share. I'll have to put one of these in my run too. :)

I was thinking I would put off on getting chickens until later, but then I got on here and, well let's just say the enabling is working. ;)

He/she wasn't leaving that chicken-I was within 4' of it, it would drag my hen getting further away from me. It came back the next day to finish her & I saw it fly off, it didn't have a red tail :idunno This happened 2 years ago but in the last couple of weeks we've had one flying through our back horse pen & one of my younger AG stags disappeared, there were a few feathers in the pen. I imagine Taste (the horse) ran him off.

Question for all the cooks :old I'm making meatloaf & mashed potatoes for my 87 yr. old mother for Christmas Day. I have a 5 hour drive & go on Christmas Eve day, should I cook it before I go or can I mix the meatloaf & freeze it raw to cook when I get there? :idunno

Those are great names for cute chicks!

Aww, thanks Teri! :) Sorry I missed your post earlier!

I never knew how great having chickens could be.. I'm addicted now! I'm definitely gonna check out your book, also :D

Side note, if anyone on here hasn't heard about Sweet Peeps Chicks in Round Rock, I can't recommend them highly enough! Catherine is just awesome. She has some beautiful chickens out there, including those amazing silver/gold spangled Spitzhaubens (I think that's how you spell it). I got Phantom and Polka Dot from her, and just yesterday, I picked up a gorgeous week old white Silkie to keep my newly hatched baby company. Oh, and a pair of baby Seramas.. Because I'm weak, and once I saw them, I couldn't help myself. :D

Lemme put it to you all this way... I live over an hour away from her, and there are plenty of other places to get chicks/chickens almost within walking distance. I go to her every time, because she puts so much love into what she does, and it shows. I couldn't be happier :)
