Texas

Aw man, the welcome sign didn't show up... Just the words. Why does it do that?
Did you click the picture for the welcome? From what I can see the : on the right side of welcome is missing. Not sure why that would happen if you clicked the little picture for it though.

Cold, windy and rainy here. It's 32*, with 19mph winds - feels like 20*, with a "wintry mix". Ya, I'm not going anywhere today.

I was all set to slaughter my two unwanted cockerels, but my husband sabotaged me. It is nasty cold, rainy and windy so he decided it was too cold a day to do it and let them out. They live another week....

You do know what "cage free" in the commercial industry means, don't you?  Just as many chickens stuffed into a building as possible.  Debeaked so they don't cannibalize themselves.   I also learned that "access to pasture" might be one single little pop door  opening up to a 10 x 10 foot yard (which might be concrete) off a huge overcrowded building housing tens of thousands of chickens.

The labeling on commercially-raised livestock may not mean what you think it means.
nope didnt know that..awesome
i mean, I knew it was still very commercialized but i thought they had a little bit better of a set up.
Back to square one i guess, trying to find eggs until april

I made this this morning. Have not tried it yet, but it sure smells good! I changed up the recipe a bit and used cinnamon applesauce in place of the butter and added a 1/2 tsp cinnamon to the batter. Can't wait to try it. Letting it cool more first. :) Apple Cinnamon Bread 1/3 cup brown sugar (not packed) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2/3 cup white sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 cup milk 1 apple, peeled and chopped Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl and set aside. Beat white sugar and butter together in a bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, until incorporated; add vanilla extract. Combine flour and baking powder together in another bowl; stir into creamed butter mixture. Mix milk into batter until smooth. Pour half the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Next add half the apples and half the brown sugar cinnamon mixture. Lightly pat apple mixture into batter. Pour the remaining batter over apple layer; top with remaining apples and add more brown sugar/cinnamon mixture. Lightly pat apples into batter; swirl brown sugar mixture through apples using a finger or spoon. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the loaf comes out clean, 30 to 40 minutes. I'm in Dripping and would like to find local sources of chicks...I'm getting my first ones soon. The only place I've found so far is Hill Country Poultry in Burnet.

There is a farm that sells eggs in HEB and to Whole Foods whose birds DO get proper pasture. The HEB eggs are not organic, while the Whole Foods eggs are (and are more expensive). I can't remember the name of the farm, but I did contact them and specifically ask about the hen's care. They are rated very highly on lists rank farms based on things like amount of outside time, square feet per bird, etc. As I said, I can't remember the name of the farm, but they are in Texas. The HEB eggs are in a paper carton with a creamy label. I wish I could remember the name, but they are the only eggs I would buy if I didn't have my own.

Dripping Springs? Any feed store will sell chicks pretty soon. There is a feed store, Strutty's I think the name is, on Hwy 281 just a few miles north of Hwy 46. I have a feeling that if you asked them for specific chicks, they would order you what you want. They last year all their birds came from from Murray MacMurray.

I'll see if my friend has enough eggs to sell to you too. She lives close to us - by Slaughter Elementary School. Isn't that a horrible name for a school?! It was a recognized teacher in MISD from years ago. Almost all the schools in the city are named for teachers who made a difference.
