Anyone around here raise quail? What are your thoughts on them?

I raise quail! Funnily enough, I only bought 10 chicks and 4 died. Of the 6 that survived, I got only one female. I'm pretty sure she's the one that my dog killed. :(

Of course, when choosing only the most rambunctious of chicks, you're bound to get a bunch of males. Those would be pretty good eating, I've heard. I got too attached to mine and I love their little crowing noises, hehe! Their eggs are tiny and adorable. They have all sorts of health benefits. Most people who buy quail eggs for the health benefits recommend eating them raw because that is when they are most potent. I wanted to raise quail for the eggs because of my immune disorder. Alas, I got about four eggs before the quail started to not like the weather, haha!

I might actual have another female, but I have coturnix and A&M quail. The coturnix are supposed to be easy to sex (and if they are easy to sex, I have two males), but the A&M quail aren't so easy. You can check for this foam stuff that they create for mating, but if they already mated, then females would have it, too. Gah!

....I'm rambling. In short, quail are fun, adorable, make cute noises, and they are pretty simple compared to chickens. :D

Would anyone near San Antonio happened to have mesquite limbs lying they want to get rid of ? I'm looking for a certain size. Preferably large enough for a hand to wrap around and Y shaped branches. Please let me know!

Well, I got some work done today! I finally scrubbed the patio clean and arranged the table, chairs and potted plants. Some of them aren't looking too good, so I'm going to work the soil later. It looks like a couple of them are settled in dirt that has a bit too much clay. I might take some of the soil from the coop that's nice and loose (and packed with nutrients) and mix it in with the dirt that is already in the pots. It'll loosen up the dirt, too, which the plants might need right now.

If only I could keep those darn chickens off the patio. Hmmm...

I didn't get a chance to put up the fishing line, but we didn't have any eye hooks anyway and I need about ten to tie the line in. Hopefully I can get them this week. Dad nixed my plan to put up a scarecrow. He said he has a feeling he'll look outside while he's eating breakfast or drinking his coffee and he'll see it in the middle of the yard, staring at him. He also said he'd swear that it was moving and he'd become paranoid.

Kinda makes me want to put one up outside his bedroom window to see what'll happen...but let's not. Don't want to give him a heart attack, hehe!

And I've come to realize that my ducks don't lay very well and it's probably my fault. I think I need to feed them separately from now on. Indie, our new muscovy, eats separately and lays fairly well, whereas Ducky and Sweedy don't lay well at all. Maybe having a more regular amount of feed will result in better laying. The chickens kind of eat everything if given the chance, haha!

Found this on BYC. I did not know this until today and I have had hens laying eggs for 3 years.
Now I know and so do you.
