Good morning! It's a wee bit chilly here today but should turn out great. I'm hoping I can get a road ride in and not a trainer ride. Too cold and damp right now. It was foggy earlier.

I have this huge desire to go to the feed store and pick up some chicks right now. Need to fight that one. I am not ready for chicks. I need to have the coop built first. More importantly, I need a brooder. Food would be helpful, dishes too. I'm going to do fermented feed so I would need to start that first... Apple cider vinegar would be needed then. {sigh} I need to fight this urge right now.

We are supposed to get rain tomorrow too. I really hope it does rain, even though it blows working in the yard. It is so dry here. I don't want Stage 4 drought restrictions! I need to be able to water so I can have grass in my whole yard and not patches of grass and dirt.

Newbie in San Angelo, TX.

I've got 4 chicks that are almost 2 weeks old. I moved here from South Florida last August and this harsh winter weather has really thrown me for a loop. When I found out that backyard chickens are a possibility (with some rules to follow), I was excited to give it a try since my husband and I are also recent empty-nesters and with the move away from our family and friends in South Florida, we needed something to occupy our time (chicken therapy!).

Poor poor Ms. Jellybean!!! Why don't you start picking up your dishes, feed, etc. so you will have your stuff on hand when you can't fight the urge off.

I think you need to ride like the wind to squash your urges to buy.

I called one of the feed stores..... Fighting off may be a losing battle. They have barred rocks, RIR, black australorps - I want this breed, buff chanteclers - why would they sell this breed here! They are extremely cold hardy and originated in Canada!, Ameraucanas - which are probably EE's.

So if I go and get any, I would just get the BA's. Two of them. I should get my list out to see what I want to start with. I know black copper marans are on there. I hope I can find them close by. I guess I could just put an order in with MPC.

Ohhhh, this is bad. Very bad.

You need to fight this urge! LOLOL If you think you can have your coop ready in 6-8 weeks, then go and get them!!

I started my coop a good while ago. We are still going to be pushing it to have the inside totally finished to put them in. This weather has wrecked havoc on the painting part.

Welcome Susan! I have baby chicks too! Range in age from 1 week to about 3 weeks.


Speaking of food dishes, what kind do ya'll use for your chicks? I had gotten the round feeders with the screw on bottle. I don't like it. It holds the food good in the plastic bottle, but when the chicks starting eating it, it just pours out. I'm thinking of going with the long multi-opening model.

I want to get these. I've seen them locally, I think. From what I've read, FF will work in any dish (except metal).

I want Black Copper Marans too. Welsummer, light sussex, Buckeye and an Ameraucana.... I'd love a cream legbar, but can't afford that right now. Future bird.

It doesn't make sense to just get the Australorp right now. Does it? I really only wanted one of each kind.

If I order from MPC they will come in July. Could they stay outside all the time in July and skip the brooder? It is so warm then I would think so. They would still need special care....

I should just take the day off work and go do my yard work. That will be a good change for me and maybe I can ride my bike later. If it isn't too windy. These spring winds are horrible! I need to be productive in a way I can see. Work just doesn't cut that for me. lol!

The bag is under to much in the dumpster to get the tag

I was hoping their website would list everything but it doesn't. I did compare tags before we started using it since I didn't know anything about the feed. The only obvious difference was 2% more for the protein but I didn't check all of the vitamins/minerals because I truthfully didn't know what they should be. I wasn't a big fan of the feed when I opened it up because you could see cracked corn mixed in it. I'm sure there's corn in our other feed but at least you can't see it. We bought 2 chicks last year from them and 1 had wry neck, I'm not sure what hatchery they use (I was led to believe they hatch for themselves but they are using a hatchery this year so either something changed or they used a hatchery last year too). I'm not sure if the feed they sold us is the same that they use for their chicks. The wry neck from last year improved but passed away at 6 weeks suddenly, no symptoms of why.
