This is Peter who has, once again, escaped his living quarters. You may not be able to tell but that's his house in the background. Smallish house, it's just for the rainy days and to get out of the sun, and nice sized run. He's figured out how to unhitch the fence from the nail on the wood fence. Today's project...

It has been a while since I've been here. The family and I went on a primitive camping trip for spring break at Sam Houston National Forest. Loads of fun.

We had just been given a baby chick and had to take it with us so that it would live. That was an experience and we got weird looks from other campers with our three large breed dogs and baby chicken in tow.

Since we had lost two pullets previously-they got crushed during a wind storm- i decided to get two more to replace them R-I-Rs to keep the other baby chick company. She seems to get lonely by herself. Also, we added rabbits. Not sure exactly what they are but I think they are Rex rabbits.

I have a question about the chicks. The older pullets (currently 3 months old) do not accept the baby chicken. They treat it like food. So for now all the chicks live in the house brooder. Will they be accepted when they are bigger or will this always be a problem?

o my days!!! the poop thing!!! ewwwwwww!! I started by bringing her in at night and she had a spot in the bathroom, come morning i would put her back out and then again backin at night, it was so adorable, because when she'd see me at the gate at 7p-8p, she would "come a runnin'!!!" That began in September. When the temps reached over 100's she began paying attention to my cats who have always came and gone as it pleases them.....that is how she learned the window thing... by Nov-Dec, during the day she would go outside to do her business, just like the cats, but at night or early morning she does still have her occassional mishaps....if i keep her diet right, it's very formed and an easy clean up....my cats are revolted by those occassions

After plenty of on-line surfing and asking around, I have successfully identified Ms.KornKorn as a RIR or Texas Red; apparently her kind is bred for meat....nonononon

My cats both love her dearly and are very protective, if she is outdoors, at least one is with her at all times, but for a little while one of my next door neighbors had some funny little looking tribal chickens that would jump the 6 ft privacy fence and hang out with KornKorn for the day on/off. She LOVED it and would beat them outside before daybreak to be ready for them, she was dominate over them....she such a big girl....She sleeps in the house at night, and right next to either cat that's in.... So when spring chicks started selling last month, i bought the eight 1 wk olders from a feed supply store...they were just little puffs of cottons.... 2 RIR, 2 Newhampshire Reds, 2 golden sex links and 2 buff orpingtons which i have fallen so hard in love with!!! The BO's are so very brave and curious and personable! They melt my heart, they are so loving and when i hold them, it's like holding a little rainbow.... my family & friends are on the verge of calling the men in white....LOL

Dear Texas Forum,
I want to apologize to all of you for making you so Itchy.

I am ashamed to say that with this winter being so cold and so many health issues i was not at all vigilant about checking on the ladies for issues.

They got clean bedding fresh food and water but spent most of the time in the run and packed so much of the dirt I am sure now that they were not able to bathe properly. ( I thought they only used the dust bath to cool down like pigs and mud.)

I will be way more vigilant in the future and will make sure they have proper poultry bath houses from now on.

I want you all to know that if not for this Texas forum and the natural chicken one I would still be wondering instead of acting!

So as I am sorry for making you scratch

I am VERY GRATEFUL for the results.

WOWWW!!! It's SO beautiful! It is SO PRETTY that I'm compelled to write my very first post!! Bravo to you ClovisMan, for yours, is an awesome coop... and somewhere in chickenland, I am sure that Ms. KornKorn's agenda is considered an awesome "coup"

I am brand new to "fowl play"... I was adopted this last summer by an adult hen who just showed up in my backyard one day and insisted on me becoming a part of her life.... That was June 2013 and I've been literally "winging it" by following HER lead, the advice of my 2 cats, perusing at BYC, and random ideas fueled by adult beverages...

I don't know where it went Left......but that chicken...Ms. KornKorn... now comes and goes as she pleases thru my office window that I leave open for her all day. Her food bowls are in the kitchen next to the cat's bowls. She went from hanging out in the corner of the yard and sleeping in a tree at night to having a climate controlled spot of her choice...sofa, bar stool, top of file cabinets, or end of my bed. There are eight 3 week old chicks under a heat lamp in a storage bin, that I am ready to transition to a backyard coop I have built by "heart" and not by reason... Pics are to come...

Sounds like Ms. KornKorn won the lottery when she found you! Depending on where you are in Texas and what your night temps are, I would give them at least another week or even more in the brooder before moving them to the backyard. Happy for all of you and good luck with the transitioning to the backyard coop. Can't wait to see your pics
