Texas

We just picked up 6 turkey poults from our local feed store.  We had 2 in our hatchery surprise assortment but only kept them for a week and sold them to someone who bought a number of our chicks.

The ones we picked up this morning are driving me CRAZY.  They are loud, I can't seem to get a brooder temp that they like...Once I finally get it where they will be quiet, I've noticed a couple panting so I raise the heat a little and it gets crazy again.  They don't huddle together, they don't move out from under the heat even when panting, they just fall asleep...

My thinking is, if I can't get them to a comfortable 'quiet' heat, then cooler is better...maybe not for my sanity...I really don't want them to overheat.

They are drinking, trying to drown themselves and not really interested in food unless I'm holding it in my hand and they accidently get some when trying to peck my ring...

I might go to TSC and see if they have any chicks left from Tuesday's shipment.  The last thing we need is more chicks/chickens but the only thing I can think of that is making this time so much crazier than last time is that the poults really do learn from the chicks.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Turkeys seem to like it a little warmer then chickens do. I also found that if you cover the top of the brooder they seem to like it better. Think they do not feel safe with the top all open. And yes I had to leave the tv on all nite on Fox News for real. If I did not they would make so much noise and wake everyone up until someone turn it back on. They are now going on 6 weeks old they weigh almost 2 1/2 pounds. I will move them to an outside coop this weekend. It did seem to help them stay quit when I got the 6 EE in a Brooder beside the turkeys.i am hoping to move them all outside this weekend. I am dividing the coop up for them so they are not in the same area.

Cutest babies ever!!
Very cute pic!

Well, my babies were lost and couldn't remember how to go in the brooder by themselves. I walked out the back door and I could hear them squawking, lol. So momma had to put them to bed again.

Oh my that is such a sweet pic.

I am so sorry to hear the news about your flock. We lost 3 older silkies to a skunk that tunneled through and under quite a bit of sand and then made it through the narrowest crawl space to tunnel under yet another wall to get to the birds. We thought we had the birds well protected but that skunk was determined. I only have very young silkies right now and a few of our pet layers. I hope you put together a lovely flock. Take care,
Deborah
