Wow, 35 yrs. Yesterday on Family Feud they asked "which pet lives long time" and the no. 1 answer was "turtle". Somehow the answer "my ex" did not make the top entry.

she felt attacked Lisa because she was giving out very bad advise here and on other threads but when anyone darn correct the erroneous information she became offended....she has no experience but had all the answers!! no one attacked her just corrected her and I might add in a very kind way!!!

That is correct. Ms. Jellybean has NEVER owned chickens yet even tried to correct long time chicken owners on things she knew nothing about and worse was directing new chicken owners like she is an authority!

My personal experience with her on PMs was when I posted for actual chicken owners help and not copy/pasted internet garbage...the PM I received from MS. jellybean said I "must be having a bad day" and she "would let it go this time"....so yes, I sent her an email telling her to shove off.

But you know what? I didn't go crying to anyone that she was "mean" to me!

I'm so disappointed. It looks like all of my CL eggs stopped developing. They are due to hatch Monday/Tuesday, I set them late during the day. Out of the 6 we set, one didn't develop, 2 quit around a week and it looks like the other 3 quit not long after that, maybe 10/14 days? The 3 bantam EE eggs have been looking wonderful, and today we only noticed movement in one. Both Turken eggs have been looking great and today we only saw movement in 1. The shipped eggs are to dark to really tell anything other than air cells. The few eggs I'm still not sure on still have a large amount of room at the bottom.

I'm not sure what I did wrong to have quitters at so many different stages. I'm not giving up, and not pulling any unless they are obvious, which a number of them are...I'm trying a dry hatch and plan to add a wet sponge on Friday when I remove the turner tray. I had a little issue with temps around 10 days when I removed a red plug from the FI4200. I've read to leave both plugs in to cause a little stress to the chicks. The temp issues weren't really drastic and were straightened out but this does seem to be the timeline most stopped developing. Should I have left the plugs in until hatch?

I candled Monday and everything looked so much more promising...that was day 14. The air cells on the eggs that weren't shipped and were from our own group that looked fine, are now tilted, if that makes sense. I put the home eggs in as a control, to see if I could hatch them even if the shipped eggs didn't hatch. I seem to have failed.

I have NN eggs coming next week and oversold my EE's because the shipped eggs we have are silkied ameraucana. Now I'm nervous to incubate the new eggs and wondering if I need to order a few EE's. If my own personal eggs aren't going to make it, the shipped eggs probably don't stand much of a chance either...
CL - cream legbars? I've seen some people discussing that they found the cream legbars to have hatching issues and not be very thrilled with the overall health and vigor of the birds. A lot of these new breeds still need to have kinks worked out of their gene pool. May not be anything you did at all.

Apparently these aren't necessarily a "new breed" as much as perhaps getting more common here in the US. But anyway, some experienced breeders of old-time heritage chickens from old bloodlines have mentioned they weren't impressed with what they had seen in legbars.

I don't think ANYONE's advice, regardless of how long they've raised chickens, should be taken as gospel. Everyone's experience is varied and what some people do, others would NEVER do... Take opinion for what it is... and do deeper research for yourself. I've been a mechanic for years but I'd never consider myself the authority on all things mechanic. I still talk to other mechanics, read books and research online. I've never owned chickens before and am completely new to this all (this forum included) so I don't throw out more than casual conversation. lol Just my thoughts on the matter

After reading another of your posts, I guess that was a stupid question.
My wife would like to get a duck for a pet. Do you think it could stay with the chickens so it would be safe ?
Some people have good luck keeping a duck or two with their chickens. I have not had any chickens since I started raising ducks, so I can't speak from experience. As long as the ducks have a kiddie pool to swim in, they'll be happy. But, be sure not to feed them medicated feed, especially as ducklings. They grown much faster than chicks do so they eat more, and if they are fed medicated feed they will literally be poisoned by it.

Duck eggs are delicious! You should try some!!

Quote: can I chime in??
if they free range they don't need medicated...the medicated feed is for brooder babies...
Coccidiostats and/or antibiotics are the two most common medications added to medicated chicken feed.
Coccidiosis is hard to control by sanitation practices alone.
they come by it naturally in the dirt and become immune...otherwise a brooder baby will be very susceptible to coccidiosis when it finally gets in the dirt and coop

as far as duck and chickens living together mine do!

Our first NN were part of our Cackle hatchery surprise. They were so cute as chicks we had to keep them! We were surprised by how well they laid, all winter with no extra light, we ordered more this year, this time from Ideal. We also ordered another surprise this year and we got one NN, we are hoping is a cockerel. I set 2 of our NN eggs with our Cream Legbar cockerel. The thing is, they don't sell here very well so I've had a little issue selling the extras from the sexed pullets we ordered. I know they are hard to get use to for some people looks wise, but ours are very sweet and great layers.

They did fine during the summer. They do have less feathers and during the winter they tend to keep their necks covered buy hunkering down...if that makes sense.

And I was just about to ask you how they did in the winter! Lol.
I'll add those to my "list"

Is it Ruston Poultry on here that breeds them? I love her pictures

Me too! lol
Actually...not this weekend but the next.
Then again in June to drop off some feather babies for Lovingmyhens!

Hello my husband and I ate from Magnolia we are new to Backyard chickens :)
Welcome!!
I have Cubalaya's

What a handsome guy! Pretty girls too!

Hope it works for you. I have not hatched eggs that were shipped so don't know how much difference it might make in those eggs that have been "mistreated" by the post office.

I have shipped eggs to a friend and even though the eggs arrived looking ok, nearly every one had their air cells detached. Shipped some more to her and had the same problem as well as that shipment having eggs broken. I swear the post office plays football with the boxes being shipped.
This! I seriously think they do

Chicken Math strikes AGAIN!!! Have to build bigger coop.
wink.png

Whaaaaaaaat?
Come build mine! lol

All that's for your chickens??? That's bigger than our whole house!!
Right?!

Wow! How many chickens will that hold?
STILL not enough

You are putting your mother-in-law in the workshop???

I thought that mite be what happen!! I seen a post from one person that ****** me off. I was going to stay out of it and not say anything cause I do not like people butting in to my business and this is not place for that kind of drama. I also don't think this is the place for people that can not live and let live to to be. What Msjellybean does or does not do is no body's **** BUSINESS but hers and if they don't like it that way they should just go F--- themselves!!!!!!!!! Sorry but when people act stupid it pisses me off.

Well I will get off my soap box now and get out of bed!!!

Sure wish she would come back and that other person can stay away!!! If someone see or talks with her let her know I miss her.
I'm sure she knows but if not I will tell her :)

In case you were wondering....

This little fact of life came from a FB friend.
lau.gif

I had a rabbit that used to do the same to our poor cat..

yes there are! and I don't usually chime in but I've seen her and one other person in the last several months practically run off some regulars due to the constant snarky uneducated comments and the advise I've referred to was at great financial expense when followed!! but when anyone made a comment that they disapproved of they would flag them and cause drama...it's been going on for at least 6 mos...all but became their personal thread for a long while! needless to say I know the behind the scenes...there has been unbelievable drama due to egos....as you said many ways work in different situations! so ask yourself why would anyone become offended if your opinion differs??

anyway this thread use to be so much fun! spent so much wasted time enjoying catching up!!! hoping it gets that vibe back!
I'm either totally oblivious or I've missed a ton

It took me HOURS to get this done in between work lol
So sorry if I'm behind!

I'm going..tomorrow I think, to pick up some new fuzzy butts!
1 Cream legbar pullet, 4 Golden Cuckoo Marans, and maybe 1 or 2 Blue Marans.
I'll be raising up the chicks for Lovingmyhens and keeping 2 of the GCMs for myself! :)
The GCMs are autosexing, so I wont have to worry about roos.
So excited to have some chocolate layers! Plus they're pretty birds...
