My ducks roam the duck yard and the back yard during the day, but they get put up in their house every night. Because ducks nest on the ground, and domestic ducks really cannot fly, they will be decimated by coyotes, dogs and other predators very quickly if they are left out at night. Dogs and coyotes have been known to swim out onto a pond to get at ducks in the water. So, if you want to have them for long, put them in a secure building at night just like you do your chickens. They are very easy to herd. Mine used to put themselves up at night before the automatic door closed, but for the past couple of months I have had to go out and put them up at sundown. Maybe I culled the lead drake????LTF ~ Question on ducks. Dh and I have a good sized pond at our place, and we were wanting to get either some ducks or geese. Do you pen your ducks up at night or do they have the run of the place?
Yes, here are a few pictures. The house I live in has a huge back yard, so I put up a temporary fence across the yard to create the duck yard on one side. During the day I open the gate and let the ducks into the back yard, where there is more grass. They have a kiddie pool in the back yard, and a pool in the duck yard, so they have access to water in both locations.Do you have pictures of your set up?
