Texas

My babies won't roost up on the roost at night yet either. They do get up there during the day, but when sundown comes, they huddle up in the corner under the coop brooder. I have my nests blocked off to keep them from nesting there. I assume when they get big enough they will start roosting up there on their own?

Sorry about your babies. :(

@Harley ~ Your turkeys are getting huge!
I don't know what to tell you about your chick. Just keep an eye on her and keep her separated.

Ya know I thought mine were doing that too, they are almost 8 weeks, but last night I went out after it was dark and they were all up on the highest roost, good thing it is a Long limb. They were so cute!! I was so excited because I wasn't sure what to do.

Used to have a EE rooster with a awesome personality, loved to be fed and was great to his girls. The poor Roo was a gutless coward however and ran at the first sign of trouble even if his ladies were danger he'd save his own skin. A EE is no Jersey Giant but I would think it would still be a hit or miss on getting a Roo like what you want. Be better off just building a outdoor pen if your having problems or whatnot or train a pup to be a LGD.

Thanks for the advice. I have a German Shepard that is really good with the girls. She acts like she is watching over them, but all she really wants to do is play with them, I think. Maybe with a little time she will get the idea. Do you know of any website or blog I can go to to help me train her for this??

Ok thank you I'm just not in the position to take any Roos here at my house at our ranch is where I have one and will take a Wyandotte If I am unable to re-home all of them and they start to crow I will probably use you as a back up. I wish I could keep Roos but I'm in a neighborhood and I'm pushing it with all my noisy hens

.
Thanks

If you are looking for a Silver Laced Wyandotte Roo, I have 6. Since they are related to my hens and I can't keep that many, my husband says dinner, lol. If you want one let me know. Mine are 8 weeks old.

I also have at least 2 RIR Roos and 2 BR Roos. Also 8 weeks. I am looking for unrelated Roo for my hens though.

Thanks, but I am just still kicking the idea around. I will try to spread the word around for you though.

I'll have the Roos for another 4-6 weeks before my hubby starts picking them off. I can't take another Roo till those 4-6 weeks pass though. I'm in a tight situation. My neighbor has wild game chickens on his property, he has already reduced his flock down to 6 birds, 1 Roo and 5 hens. 3 of his hens hatched babies. But his Roo has killed other Roos and it has been eyeing my pullets. Since they are wild, they fly very well and my fence is no barrier. I'm looking for a pair of Roos to guard my hens from that game Roo. Because my Roo needs to be mature to stand a chance I need my girls to get big enough to be able to tell him off when he needs it. Normally it wouldn't be an issue, but since I got my chickens his chickens have taken to coming over. One of his hens tried to steal my chicks when they were younger! I hope that once my flock is established peace will return and his chickens won't coming visiting anymore, lol.

Have your chickens been having a field day with June bugs?
I had a bunch of them get caught in a birdbath every night because it is located by a light that is on every night. So now I have every water holding container I could find under that light...I think I harvested about a pound of them this morning!! Between 15 chickens they disappeared in about 5 seconds!!

That's a good idea!!

I can probably take another SLW Rooster. Are they hatchery birds or did you get hatching eggs from a breeder?

I have not hatched them quite yet the SLW will hatch in August. I got them from a BYC breeder I will attach the pictures she sent me of some of her parent stock. Would you come all the way here or meet me half-way? And are you still wanting one later in the year? if so that would be a blessing

I will need some time to figure out genders.
Thanks

ANTS!

Please...I need help from Texas people. I have ants in the run. So far it's just the run. I'm new to chickens...so I'm at a loss as how to fix this with the chickens around.

I've had the helpful advice to just feed in the morning and the ants should go away. Ha. Not in TX!  I have food in a Grandpas Feeder in the coop, and so far it's safe, but I can't bring it in and out every day (heavy!). But there are black ants in the run. The chickens are only 9 weeks old (tomorrow...my precious babies!) and so don't spend all day in the run and seem to show no interest in eating the ants.

What can I spray around the run and coop? I can do it every day...I don't care about the work, I care only about my chickens and getting rid of ants!

Ok I do not know the answer to this question. I am a noob too BUT I have been told that orange peels are a natrual way to combat ants. BTW I am also in Texas. We happen to eat lots of oranges so and have been keeping the peels for several months. We cut them up small and let them dry out. I will run them through the food processer and turn it into powder and sprinkle it around. I'm assuming this won't hurt the chickens but I do not know. Someone please tell me if it will please! BTW dont keep the peels in styrophome container. The citrus will melt it.

I do know that anything that is granule poison is a no go! The chickens will eat it. :( I'll be following this myself. Ill have the same issue eventually.
