After seeing that my 9-weekers are starting to peck, peck, peck one another...I receive a kick in the pants to get busy on coop adjustments this weekend!

Today, I installed a poop board and roost, which also creates another shade structure. If only the ladies would sleep on the roost instead of in a huddle on the ground...they'll grow out of that, right?

Next, I created a fenced area to keep the dogs OUT, but I don't care if the chickens stay IN when they're grazing.
I still have to chicken wire the bottom of the metal fencing so the skinny dog can't get through.

I'm hoping that increased time outside the open air coop/run will reduce the pecking...?

Photos of the weekend below:

Jake, the naughty one, was calmly observing the girls.

Vato, the good one, Just wants to eat their poop.

I now have a place to hang the tools, including this super old pitchfork I scored at an estate sale this weekend.

Giant pallets, paired with smaller pallets, make up half of the "dog free" area.

Cinder blocks as stepping stones to the roost. They can get up there...but don't care to sleep there.

Pecked girl. When I first got them, only 2 or 3 were like this. I thought maybe they were just coming into feather, but I've noticed there are more that look like this now.

Doesn't her face look bad, too?

Today, I have been cleaning up years of my uncle's life. About ten years ago, my aunt came to me and said that my uncle was not acting like himself. I noticed it too. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 2 years ago. When the property got too big for them to handle, they sold it to a couple that are great. Now  my wife and I are the caretakers of the property and house. The reason I am bringing this up is to let y'all know that anything can come out of me this evening. I love my uncle very much, and am having a hard time accepting he no longer is in control of himself. So, as I was cleaning up the property today, I had a lot of time to reflect. I am sorry I am such a downer tonight, but it has been a trying day. Love y'all and God Bless.

That is a hard thing to adjust to. My Mom is 95 and lives with us. Some days she seems fine, others are crazy. It is hard to watch such a sweet lady get crotchidy one minute and silly sweet the next. I never know what mind set she will wake up in. A little lost most days.
I hope your uncle has more good days than confused ones.

Thanks man, I just need to get over it, and accept it. I think I will turn in early tonight, because I am going to Trade Days in the morning and maybe come home with 4  EE'S!!!. I just thought of something, maybe I should build my uncle a coop and get him some birds, what do y'all think?? Think it may help??

Is he close enough that you could keep tabs on his care for the chickens. Memory is usually a big factor in Alzheimer's patients. Makes it hard to get use to doing something new. I boo boobed and changed out my Mom's bedroom furniture with a nicer dresser that was given to us. It took her days to realize where her room was because it looked different and she wasn't use to it.
Good luck with the chickens and your uncle.

Took me awhile to read through this weekends postings! Whew! You guys have been busy. We're coming up on 3000 pages pretty soon! Glad to be a part of a "community" of such fun, caring people! This is the (Mon)day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it! lol Everyone have a great day. I'll pop in later when I catch a break!
