You are so right...can't tell you how much sleep I have lost and things we sacrifice having and doing for the sake of our animals...DH thinks I worry too much and sometimes try to hard knowing the situation is hopeless but I can't be any other way. But then guess who cut a hole in the back of the house to save kittens or makes nightly trips down to the chicken house...LOL

DH doing guard duty on gangs first day out. Protecting them from the big bad roo and those mean ole hens....
That's his official chicken prod...maybe they think it's a snake but they avoid it and he's never hit them with it they just don't like it.

Lol. My hubby won't admit it, but he is a softy for animals too. But I am the crazy one who climbs, crawls, and gets into unexpected places trying to rescue/save critters. Lol. But, I have also had to put down animals that were too far gone as well. It never gets easy, but sometimes it's for the best. And the animals I slaughter for the table are given the best life I can give, and then send on as gently as possible. I give thanks every time we eat one of our animals for providing my family with food.

BTW, Howard tried to drown Ebony this morning. Which has me Soo angry he is lucky I haven't decided duck is for dinner tonight.

This question is probably going to make me sound..well, dumb, but I have a rooster question.
When does a rooster start wanting to mate?
I have a 12 week Silkie roo who has yet to crow (and who I have yet to find a home for).
My ladies aren't laying yet, but if they start laying before he starts crowing...Basically I don't want chicks. Lol.
I should be fine with just collecting all the eggs right?

Can't speak for others but my young roo is 5 months old and hasn't started to crow but is trying to mount my hens. He's inexperienced yet but trying. My big roo makes fertile eggs but only have chicks if allowed to brood. I gather eggs daily and put them in the fridge. Never a problem with embreyos in the eggs because they can't develop.

Lol, that's cute! Sometimes when I have to put my ladies up early I use a couple long sticks to herd them in. I have never struck them, but they avoid it and it makes it easier to move them in the right direction with my "arms" being so long. I started doing that to herd the geese, but it works for the ducks and chickens as well.

Yeah, too bad I can't tell him how close he is to becoming dinner. I wasn't too thrilled with having a drake, but figured they couldn't all be as mean as my moms old drake. And since I don't want the cresteds breeding due to the problems crests cause, his ONLY job was to take care of his ladies and keep them happy. He continues this and he is so gone.
I am giving Ebony extra attention and treats until I can get her a companion. She will be so spoiled, lol.

I have a 11 week old bantam EE that is doing his best to crow. He got in a fight last week with the other roo which is his brother and hurt him petter good. He had a spot about the size of a quarter on the back of his head. I had to put him in a cage and he is not liking it. But the one that is crowing has been working on it now for about 2 weeks.

Went to do some weeding in my garden today.And noticed a dang amridillo rooted around in it last night. Ohhh that bugger is going down now. I told hubby I was gonna take that thing out with the 22 first chance I see it. Teach it to try and eat my garden.
