New to BYC.. just purchased property in East Tx (with a roughly 1 acre pond and a resident pair of ducks.. I think they might be golden cascades, but would very much appreciate if anyone could tell me for sure!) Am familiar with raising chickens and am reading/researching how to care for ducks but am sure I will have lots of questions over the next few weeks..!!

The coop is all finished and the girls are moved in!

It looks like your roost bar is a squared-off piece of wood. I've seen someone else on BYC mention they had a roost like that instead of a round one so the girls wouldn't have to have their feet curled all night... is that bad for the chickens? I had been planning on using an old shower curtain rod we've held on to even though we don't need it.

I used landscaping timbers for my roosts. Landscape timbers look similar to a 4X4 that has had the corners rounded off a little. Gives a nice wide platform for their feet, without any harsh corners. Landscape timbers are cheap too, $4 for an 8ft length. My chickens really like them, and I do as well since they are thick enough that they don't really need a lot of braces.

I use a 2x6 laying flat that gives them room to move around and they can cover their feet when it's cold

Yes it is a 2x4. We had kept a dowel rod for the roost originally but after my husband did a lot of research we decided to go with the board instead.

I live in the DFW area now. I live in a suburb, and all of us are eager to leave the suburbs behind and plop ourselves on a farm. I'll shoot LightningTFarm a message and look at Anna and Van Alstyne and see if there's anything out there. Thank you. :)
Your welcome. I'm sure there's more areas, but I just moved to McKinney from the Houston area in July, so I still don't know everywhere yet.

I'm just happy we don't have an HOA! Or I probably wouldn't be able to have any chickens. I know you can't have them at all in Allen. But it's expensive there anyway
