Texas

O
Good day all... Was a busy weekend...hope all of you Dad's had a great day! We built DH"S Dad a soaker irrigation system for his garden, that was his gift, works great too. DH got tools...never go wrong with tools. Had a bit of a bitter -sweet weekend though. I got 'em! Finally got 2 Black Australorp pullets. DH found them on Craig's list for me. It was a 120 mile round trip Saturday, but it was all country roads so was a nice trip. Went to Onalaska. Paid $15 each. Seemed fair to me and I've really been wanting these girls. I hope they were right about neither being a roo. They are about 12 weeks old, pretty much the same size as our teenagers which will be 12 weeks Wednesday.. This is Matilda... ...and this is Shela Matilda is bigger but they both appear healthy. I took a big chance and put them straight out in the yard. I had no place to quarantine them and it's too hot to hold them in a dog crate. We checked them over for mites and lice and they look bright and are active and were accepted quite well by the others. On a sad note...found my little cuckoo maran had passed away Sunday. She'd been on antibiotics quarantined for over a week. She appeared fine, no symptoms so i was letting her out during the day Friday and Saturday. When we checked on everybody Saturday night she was roosting by herself. She hadn't really reintagrated into her flock either so I didn't really worry too much, but I picked her up and she felt cold...her feet were cold so we put her in a nest box. When we came home from church yesterday I didn't see her in the yard, but found her on the floor of the coop. Think she died sometime in the night,,,may have fallen out of the nest...don't know...she was such a sweet bird too. But can't have any weaklings....must think positive. Will catch up on reading later...take care all [/quote Onalaska is down in my neck of the woods hope you got to see some of the lake while you were there... Congrats on the birds... Just got me some lavender orps and blrw been wanting both myself for a while...

I am from the Athens area. I am new to this chicken keeping thing but I have been reading everything I can on these forums. I started out with 6 day old chicks.

2 Production Red Pullets
1 Barred Rock (cockerel)
2 Black Sex Links (1 cockerel and 1 pullet who died after our heat lamp went out on day 4)
1 New Hampshire Red who died a week ago at 7wks due to unknown illness (possible vitamin deficiency)

3 days after getting my first batch of chicks chicken math got ahold of me and I went back and got 9 more.

3 Mottled Javas (sex unknown)
2 more Production Red Pullets
1 white Cochin ( I suspect cockerel because of red in the comb even though the comb is small)
3 Easter Eggers. (1 we gave away due to it excessively pecking the others and the other two turned out to be cockerels)

They are 8 weeks now. We will give away all but 1 of the cockerels. We will keep either the cochin or one of the EE. It would like to process my extra cockerels but DH is much more an animal lover than me and says we cannot kill animals we raised in our living room. He will never admit to liking my chickens though. I am already window shopping incubators and have a wish list of breeds I want to add to my flock. I want to hatch at school with my third graders.

On my wish list:
A Fizzled Cochin
Easter Eggers or Ameracaunas
Olive Eggers
Marans

I want a colorful basket.

I keep telling her I don't keep free loaders, if she don't lay I'll eat her. But I guess she knows I won't really do it, so that threat don't work, any others I could try? Lol.
Mine are so spoiled they have us trained, lol.
right on

Welcome from Katy!! My parents are in Athens. And I also teach 3rd grade! I have only 10 chickens. Not even sure those are legal!!!!!

have you had any issues brooding your duckling outside if you brood them outside?

No, no issues. I brooded the chicks, goslings, and ducklings outside after the temps warmed up. No losses from it. My first batch of chicks and goslings were brooded inside for a month before going outside. I kept them on heat, especially at night. My other batches of chicks, goslings, and the ducklings went straight outside into a nursery section that is draft free and has a heat lamp. The ducklings are my last babies for this year (unless I lose control again, lol). They only needed heat for 2 weeks at night because our summer temperatures were kicking in. I hope that helps.

Wow at all the people in Texas! I had no idea that there was so many chicken lovers here. I feel so much better now that I know I am not the only one.

I love my birds. It is so relaxing to listen to them croon and talk to each other. To listen to the mother chicken talking to her chicks is soothing. Watching the chicks explore their yard for the first time is my evening entertainment most days. I had no clue how much joy I would feel raising my birds.

I got:

12 Barred Rock hens
20 New Hampshire Red Hens
3 New hampshire Red Roosters
2 Ameraucana Roosters
6 Ameraucana Hens.

approx: 50 various chicks in pens waiting to get grown.

It is so cool mixing the Barred Rocks with the New Hampshire Reds. The eggs hatch out solid black chicks, some that are black and red mixed, and some that are black and red stripped. The chicks are so adorable. Several are all black except for red on their heads.

Welcome from East Texas
