Texas

I think we have a parasite issue...sorry this is so long winded...

Out of 7 laying hens, we are getting 2-3 eggs a day, usually the same girls. We have a 1 year old Great Dane who has issues with loose stool off and on, not constant but no obvious health issues and is putting on weight. We usually play it off on the fact that he eats goat poo/chicken poo any chance he gets, which could be the issue. We have 3 young goats that we've noticed in about the last week, seem a little bony in the rear end. Nothing extreme, just a little thinning out.

Most of all of the 'symptoms' we've had answers for, it is Texas and it is June and its already crazy hot. Now, here's where I start thinking its not just the heat. We have a new Dane puppy, 6 weeks old. She was doing fine the first few days we had her, brought her home Wednesday, started with loose stool yesterday and now is having runny, watery movements, with a mucus look and possibly a little blood but it could be the coloring from the food. We still have her on what the breeder had her on, no diet change, was wormed the Monday before we got her.

I don't think its stress, she couldn't be more comfortable with her surroundings. We have a pug/chi mix that had issues not to long after we got her, almost a year ago, with the same symptoms, we dewormed her and she got better.

I am taking all 4 dogs to the vet tomorrow, even though only 2 are showing signs, both Danes, and both Chihuahua mixes seem fine. I did deworm them today, with Sentry wormXplus. We wormed all 3 goats with oral safe-guard goat dewormer. Chicken and Turkeys have Wazine in their water for the next 24 hours and any eggs we collect for 2 weeks will be trashed. I also bought diatomaceous earth to start adding to food and thought about sprinkling around the yard, though I'm not sure if that would help.

There is NO WAY to keep wild birds out of our yard. We have water sources for all of the animals, lots of pecan trees for shade, plus the pecans and chicken food. We do have the chicken food where the wild birds prefer not to go but a few, usually the younger ones, will sneak into the coop.

Are we missing anything we should be doing? I've read about using a bleaching solution but I'd really like to avoid that if possible. I've also read that once you have a problem, it could always be a problem. I hate to think of having to worm all of the animals constantly and what it might do to their health, not to mention the cost. We will start a spring/fall worming routine and alternate wormers each time. Has anyone had issues and come out on top or is this something we are going to constantly have to fight.

when i worked with my grams flocks we wormed twice a year once in late fall when many of the chickens molt, slow down or stop laying and once in the ealry spring before everyone got started laying good again. But my grams had alot of land so the chickens never spent long on the same ground the big thing is to keep your grass short ive heard the worm eggs can't stand the UV's from the sun And to treat the ones showing symtoms.

i had gotten this first batch of Natt turkey eggs from a breeder in GE but i didn't tell them about the BYC egg shipping standard because i assumed everyone did it. they Not only sent them on a Thursday but in egg cartons and not bubble wrapped one was actually broken in the box upon arrival. And i don't have high hopes for the 2 hatch worthy eggs in my incubator as it was hot as hell the weekend they spent in the post-office.

I found this, if you want to look into it! It's about an hour's drive but it would save you the trouble of hatching anything and try are already through the worst of their fragility.

There are a couple other places but I thought this one seemed most reasonable. Just search for turkey poults in the Dallas page on Craigslist and there many options!

The Wazine only does one or two types of worms if I remember correctly. There isn't another "approved" dewormer for chickens so you'd have to go off-label use for giving the chickens something else. I know some that give the Safeguard goat dewormer to their chickens and they report good results with it. Have also had people tell me they had good results using the apple flavored ivermectin horse paste/gel dewormer with their chickens by mixing a little bit of the gel into some scratch grains.

If you are into "natural" things, pumpkin seeds are supposed to be a natural anti-worm food and the chickens love them and can also be used for other animals.

Thank you, I will look into the Wazine a little more to see if it will even cover what we think might be going on. My husband wanted to use the goat dewormer on them but I had him hold off because I was afraid of giving it to them orally and causing them to aspirate it. I was hoping to find something a little 'safer' to use but for treatment, I couldn't find many options. I thought about getting the kind for cattle that's a pour on but didn't know if I would be able to work out a safe dosage.

Madison hasn't shown any signs of improvement but its only been 10 hours. Hopefully by morning she will be a little better, if not I will have to take her in. I really wish vets still did house calls. I don't like the idea of taking an already sick puppy to a place filled with germs...

Ivory finally laid an egg! Its a tiny little thing.
From smallest to largest is Ivory, Ebony, Daisy. Lol. Sorry about the blurry pic, my phone sucks at taking pictures

Amusing story...Friday we had a church program that we didnt get home from until after midnight. We were both worried because the chicken house was open. Locked it up and everyone was fine. We were both beat so didn't do a good patrol. Got up Saturday morning to find where something had tried to dig under the pickets and wire for about 10 feet along the dark side of the house. Looked like what a racoon or fox would do but saw no tracks and only a little scratches on the pickets. DH was gonna stay up and put some cat food out but being it was church the next morning he didn't. We put all the dirt back and packed it down. When we came in from church Sunday afternoon we caught the culprit. It was our own chicken! Becka the sebright is "weaning" her chicks and decided to get some free time outside the 6 foot fence. Apparently she had been out all Friday afternoon having a good time digging along the wall and then flew back over the fence and put herself to bed!!!
