I think we have a parasite issue...sorry this is so long winded...
Out of 7 laying hens, we are getting 2-3 eggs a day, usually the same girls. We have a 1 year old Great Dane who has issues with loose stool off and on, not constant but no obvious health issues and is putting on weight. We usually play it off on the fact that he eats goat poo/chicken poo any chance he gets, which could be the issue. We have 3 young goats that we've noticed in about the last week, seem a little bony in the rear end. Nothing extreme, just a little thinning out.
Most of all of the 'symptoms' we've had answers for, it is Texas and it is June and its already crazy hot. Now, here's where I start thinking its not just the heat. We have a new Dane puppy, 6 weeks old. She was doing fine the first few days we had her, brought her home Wednesday, started with loose stool yesterday and now is having runny, watery movements, with a mucus look and possibly a little blood but it could be the coloring from the food. We still have her on what the breeder had her on, no diet change, was wormed the Monday before we got her.
I don't think its stress, she couldn't be more comfortable with her surroundings. We have a pug/chi mix that had issues not to long after we got her, almost a year ago, with the same symptoms, we dewormed her and she got better.
I am taking all 4 dogs to the vet tomorrow, even though only 2 are showing signs, both Danes, and both Chihuahua mixes seem fine. I did deworm them today, with Sentry wormXplus. We wormed all 3 goats with oral safe-guard goat dewormer. Chicken and Turkeys have Wazine in their water for the next 24 hours and any eggs we collect for 2 weeks will be trashed. I also bought diatomaceous earth to start adding to food and thought about sprinkling around the yard, though I'm not sure if that would help.
There is NO WAY to keep wild birds out of our yard. We have water sources for all of the animals, lots of pecan trees for shade, plus the pecans and chicken food. We do have the chicken food where the wild birds prefer not to go but a few, usually the younger ones, will sneak into the coop.
Are we missing anything we should be doing? I've read about using a bleaching solution but I'd really like to avoid that if possible. I've also read that once you have a problem, it could always be a problem. I hate to think of having to worm all of the animals constantly and what it might do to their health, not to mention the cost. We will start a spring/fall worming routine and alternate wormers each time. Has anyone had issues and come out on top or is this something we are going to constantly have to fight.
