Does anyone have a large breed rooster for sale? I need one, I'd love a Cochin, but any nice colored one would be good. I live near Texarkana, but am driving thru Dallas, Ft Worth. Waco and to Katy this weekend, so would be willing to shop for a rooster en route. Anyone? Thanks!

I have some young rhode island reds heritage that wont attack you .. and some young black copper marans I think the marans will be larger than the reds.

Craigslist posters can be the worst! We have a local one here - runs an ad every single day. My favorite is they are taking deposits for chicks yet to be hatched - "all GARANTEED [sic] to be hens." Sent an email asking how they have accomplished this biological workaround and obtained a one-sex hatch? No response. I continue to be entertained by the postings.
What does irritate me is how many people that may find chickens an enjoyable hobby are getting completely turned off by 1) their inevitable roosters, and 2) the shady people they deal with in "the chicken world."

The inevitable rooster is right but we haven't been turned off quite yet. Our first 4 chicks ever turned out to all be roos. Rehomed 1 of them and trying desperately to find homes for a Bantam rooster who just get kicks out of trying to mess with me and 1 Polish cross roo. I plan on keeping one because he is a sweet heart and introducing him to my baby Cochins that are 4-9 weeks old at some point. Hoping for some ladies this time around. We got them from a lady near us selling cochins and I think she did a pretty good job sexing them before giving them to us but I do think we ended up with 1 roo so now it might come down to which roo to keep. Oh what a world. decisions decisions.

Well I have been told I need to down size my flock a bit. So I will be looking to re-home about 4 of my ladies. I am thinking they are going to be my RIRs, but I might get rid of my 1 SLW. Haven't decided yet. They are 21 weeks old and should be coming into lay very soon. They were all de-wormed and de-mited a month ago with Epernix pour on. I have no idea what to charge for them, newbe to this. And I live around sout San Antonio.

I also have a 15 week old male Chinese gander that is nice, and a 11 week old African goose that is somewhat skittish and aggressive. I would not recommend the goose for a first time goose owner. But if I can't find her a home that can handle her, into the stew pot she goes. The young gander too, as I don't need 2 ganders fighting in my yard over mates during breeding season.

Anyone near Azle have any EE or RIR pullets? I lost half my flock during last weeks flash flood. If not I guess I'll be going to first Monday in Weatherford this weekend to see what I can find.

I think $15 is a fair price for a hatchery bred hen near POL.

I hear ya. We have 26 chickens, 2 of whom are roosters. I had horrible luck with SLWs, I brought 7 and had 1 pullet in the batch, we sold 3 of the cockerels and ate the others. The RIRs, I purchased 7 and had 1 cockerel, also eaten. Of my BRs I purchased 6 and 1 died, the other 5 are pullets. Then I purchased 6 BOs pullets and 6 BA pullets, expecting a higher number of cockerels from my straight runs, and a higher number of chick losses than we had. That is way more eggs than we need, but I can't bring myself to down size my flock to the original planned dozen chickens. of my chickens I love my BRs best, with theBOs, and BAs close second. So the first to be shipped off are the RIRs and SLW pullets. As I said they are 21 weeks, and hand raised, they will come up to eat food from your hands, though they don't like to be held.

My father made a comment and my husband said that I had to down size. I wanted to sell extra eggs, but apparently that's not good enough for my hubby. If I have to downsize though, I'd rather my ladies go to someone here that loves their birds as more than just food producers. Most of the people around here that buy/sell at animal flea markets don't care for their birds. Mine are partially tame, de-wormed regularly, and I care for any injuries they get. I also spoil them with grapes, watermelon, blackberries, corn, cucumbers, squash, and other fruits and veggies from my garden.

Of my original crew we had 10 RIR, 4 BO, and 2 GC. Then we added the EE roo. Now the original 16 where puchased day old's the week after Easter. Last month added the EE. After the flash flood we have 5 RIR (4 roos/dinner), 2 BO pullets, 1 GC pullet, and the EE roo. Don't want to start from hatchlings again at this time. I love watching them roam the yard, but I'm also thinking maybe I should build a few tractors so that they aren't washed away again. I don't know any more. Anyone have any thoughts?
