Some of my girls now have large, very red combs, and I saw one accept Screwball's advances. So eggs should be right around the corner! Screwball, now that at least 1 hen is allowing him to mate, is finding food and feeding his girls. He does have his favorite hen, one of my BRs, lol. And sometimes, like this morning, he found a grass hopped, caught it and showed it to the girls. Well a girls took it alright, then ran when he did hid dance trying to get her to allow him to mate. Poor guy, lol.

Right now only 5 of my girls have large, red combs. 2 BRs and 3 RIRs. So even chickens in the same age and breed are not maturing at the same rate. But that's OK, just seems kind of strange, lol. At least I won't have a dozen hens come into lay all at once.

Is play sand ok for chickens? I was thinking of putting a section of just play sand in their coop

I use play sand in the tray that is under the girls roosting area of the coop. It just makes it easier to clean. I got an unexpected surprise when I started using it. The little bugs all went away. I have no idea what kind of bug they were, but they didn't return.

On a sadder note none of the turkey eggs hatched one did pip and start a zip but died in the shell their was no movement from the other two eggs so i opened them one was rotten and the other was mostly feathered so i think it died closer to lock down. :hit

Sorry your turkey hatch did not go well. I have never attempted to hatch eggs. Sounds like a lot of attention to detail. No time in my life right now for that. I think if I ever do I will let a hen do it.

Does anyone have a large breed rooster for sale? I need one, I'd love a Cochin, but any nice colored one would be good. I live near Texarkana, but am driving thru Dallas, Ft Worth. Waco and to Katy this weekend, so would be willing to shop for a rooster en route. Anyone? Thanks!

Can anyone suggest to me a good way and age to introduce my 4-6 week baby cochins to my 16-18 week rooster? Right now the babies are cooped up in the coop and don't get yard time because I have 3 roos out in the yard (2 of which I'm desperately trying to rehome quickly) I want them to be a happy flock but I don't want my rooster picking on my babies. The one I'm keeping is a sweet heart rooster to me and my husband but I don't know how he will react to babies. Any help is appreciated!!

Check on Craig's list for all the areas you will be driving through. Might be easier on the roo to stop on your way home. There are several around Dallas. I just got some marans from a lady in manville (about an hr SE from katy). Found her on Craig's list. I know there are people on here from the Waco area,
I'd just keep repeating your request once a day to make sure everyone sees it!
