Went to the Iduma Mother's day poultry auction today and bought these for my wife. Three beautiful Roosters and four red sex link hens.

Did you get them for a good price? I wanted to go, but I ccouldn't have bought any birds and I do not need anything else. Trying not to spend money. Wish I had gone there and picked up a laying hen instead of these chicks that are just now 5 weeks.

I don't actually know - but it's worth a try.

EDIT: Texas Organic Vegetable Gardening book implies that it will work for all types of ants. Looked them up in the Texas Bug Book, which says this:
"Natural control: Lizards and birds love to eat them. Thick mulch around all plants helps. Beneficial nematodes help control all pests that live in the ground."
"Organic control: Treat the mounds with plant oil products such as EcoEXEMPT." (I have no idea what EcoEXEMPT is.)

I interpret this as meaning it will work (with the orange oil). I have many types of ants in my yard, not just fire ants, and I think I've had these before (makes more sense that they are the ones who might have eaten the cabbage...). I just today found a new garden bed invaded with yet a new looking type of ant (they bit, but not fire ants), and true fire ants have built this strange mound stretching between stacked bags of compost (discovered when lifting a bag from the top. Ow!!!). In my experience the orange oil and Garrett juice together has worked on all of the ants.

I tried putting corn meal on the fire ant mound. I read it some where. The mounds went away. As long as they aren't bothering me, I don't care if they died or moved.

I was sitting in the run with the 12 week old chicks yesterday and Mr. Feathers (5 year old EE) jumped up on my lap. I couldn't resist getting a good close up picture of his pretty feathers! If the sun had been out, they would really have shone!

We gave $10.00 each for the laying hens and $8.00 for the roosters. My wife bought them I just paid for them. It was what she wanted and also her Mother's day present so I guess it was a great deal since she was happy. We had four eggs from the hens this morning. ET

Hello fellow Texans!

I'm a new chicken owner in Austin. I have a five-chick mixed flock. They're about 2-3 weeks old now. Having chickens has been even more fun than I thought. And man, do they grow fast!

I have a welsummer, a dominique, a black copper maran, a cream legbar, and an olive egger

Here they all are about a week and a half ago...


They're bigger now! Here are a few pics from yesterday (They're all very sweet about me taking too many pictures of them. LOL)
