Best egg layers are leghorns white egg layers, sex links (red or black, but if you want to breed them won't be the same) Rhode island , barred rock for brown egg. But the best egg layer year round are leghorns.They will be egg layers
I've had leghorns, rhode island, barred rock, easter eggers, black copper maran black sex link, brown sex link. From all those leghorns were #1

But my hens are now 7 weeks old and doing great outside. I have a dominique, a wellsummer, a maran, an olive egger, and a cream legbar. They've all been great -- super friendly. The dominique and the wellsummer are probably the friendliest. (They fall asleep on me. LOL.) Like you, I kinda just asked for suggestions when I was selecting birds. One that someone suggested to me that seemed pretty neat for warm climates: Penedesence. I don't have one -- just a rec from some other folks on BYC that seemed cool.
