Best egg layers are leghorns white egg layers, sex links (red or black, but if you want to breed them won't be the same) Rhode island , barred rock for brown egg. But the best egg layer year round are leghorns.
I've had leghorns, rhode island, barred rock, easter eggers, black copper maran black sex link, brown sex link. From all those leghorns were #1

Well the rains coming back. I think its time to break out the chicken life jackets.

We've got several hundred birds on the ground under two weeks old I'm worried about in this weather.

Just got done battening down the hatches. I never fixed up the roof last week since I had company and now a tarp will have to suffice. In addition to that one of my ducks got bumble foot and is limping all over the yard. Of course that happened while I was away overnight. She is doing better today but it is still pretty bad, poor girl. I'm also starting to question two of my pullets that are now 6 weeks old. Hopefully it is just my inexperience questioning their sex. On a good note my duck eggs are selling like wildfire and I have a list of people now and not enough eggs. Hope everyone stays afloat the next few days.

When we had all that rain on the coast I had just had my chicks like a week, went and got the biggest hard plastic kid's pool at Wal Mart, worked out pretty well. Had to clean the shavings daily but it worked, it has been very wet down here, bout to get wetter. rg's

I am in Deep East Texas in Angelina County. Starting a backyard flock and would like to know what breed people are raising in my climate. Any information would be much appreciated.

I forgot delawares, this are know to be good layers too. I just got some but they still small.

4mcliftons this is a good option if you just want layers and not interested in breeding.I would of include some leghorns.

Potential tropical storm coming and a Flood Watch for my area from tonight until Wednesday. Not looking forward to half the city being underwater again.

I got some replacement chicks in from Ideal a few days ago since half of my original order form Murray Mcmurray ended up dying from cocci. Last night I found a couple of the chicks from my first order walking around the laundry room and one perched on the lamp over the smaller brooder. So much for keeping them away from each other. At least I caught them before this weather system that's coming in as I would hate to be hunting for bird netting while everyone's fighting over the last gallon of water. I don't want to be chasing little chickens all over my laundry room in the dark if the power goes out. Plus, there's a gap under the door to the kitchen big enough for them to get through to where the over excitable puppy sleeps. She's not prone to hunting behavior or anything but watching her play with the cat has convinced me she would accidentally hurt anything as fragile as the chicks are.

I'm also new to chickens. So my info is limited But my hens are now 7 weeks old and doing great outside. I have a dominique, a wellsummer, a maran, an olive egger, and a cream legbar. They've all been great -- super friendly. The dominique and the wellsummer are probably the friendliest. (They fall asleep on me. LOL.) Like you, I kinda just asked for suggestions when I was selecting birds. One that someone suggested to me that seemed pretty neat for warm climates: Penedesence. I don't have one -- just a rec from some other folks on BYC that seemed cool.
