What kind of rooster are you looking for? I have a little Americana or Easter egger cockerell I might be rehoming or a Cochin roo. Not sure who yet. The cockerell is so sweet. ; 3;

And I have an 8 week old EE that is probably a cockerel who will be needing a new home.

If I was back home in the States I'd take y'all up on it. Right now we're settled in Belgium. Got a barnyard roo that's part Chantecler part something else. Only 12 euros!

I have no idea how much money that is. I am basically a home person. Quite content to stay in my own backyard with my plants and my chickens. I am pretty sure backyards are the same all over the world. That special place.

It's about $13.06. Pretty cheap. Sex Link hens are 10 euro ($10.89) as was my Columbian.

I was bored today and reading randomness. I saw an article that I've seen before (avian flu wiping out chickens, egg shortages etc.) except this time it made me think of other birds. Does this mean there is going to be a shortage for turkeys? Should I get a turkey to raise for thanksgiving since there is such a shortage now? And what about that person who keeps advertising on craigslist who can't spell the names of the birds and the one who wants to sell greenfire farms birds for only 15 dollars? Oh my tortured brain, go to sleep!

LOL. I don't think anyone will be going without holiday turkeys, but the prices will probably be a good bit higher. If you want to raise turkeys all the time, I would say that getting some now would be a good idea. You will probably spend as much on buying a turkey and feeding it as you would on buying a store bought turkey for Thanksgiving this year. Of course if you raised your own, you would have the satisfaction of knowing where it came from, compared to your storebought turkey. We got on a waiting list last year because we wanted to raise turkeys all the time and with the increase in avian flu issues, and I am glad that we did, since the avian flu problems could start severely hampering the ability of people to import/export poultry. Which does not bode well for poultry breeds that are already threatened in numbers.

People who can't spell the names of poultry breeds may have spelling problems, or it could indicate that they are not quality breeders and thus have not taken the time to learn the proper spelling of the names. But I do find it annoying when people are claiming to have excellent quality stock and they don't take the time to learn the correct spelling. Makes me wonder about them and their birds.

Selling GFF birds for only $15 may not necessarily indicate a problem. GFF charges an arm and 6 legs for their birds, but if the person is simply interested in helping other people get the breed of bird they love, then charging a reasonable price will get more birds into the hands of folks that want them. I don't sell many of our birds, but I've sold a few, and I don't believe in charging high prices simply because we have rare birds and could theoretically charge a lot of money for them. I love our breed and would like to see more people seriously breeding them. If I price them too high, that's going to cut out a lot more people who won't be able to afford them. And honestly, unless you raise birds like they do commercially, you're not going to make money on birds or eggs or meat. So you have to kinda look at what the seller's motivation is when they are pricing their birds.

I picked up the Cackle Hatchery special in May to get heritage turkey toms. Glad I did. Hoping that they missed and I got a female or two.

Found another site that has a lot of the heritage turkeys, plus some new crosses of them that are gorgeous. Plan on ordering through them next time to get some of the odd birds. www.porterturkeys.com

I don't plan on getting anymore birds until next year. If AI is still making the rounds then I will stick to NPIP and AI tested breeders.


I have done research on the blood draw for poultry, but I would prefer to have someone experience standing by to guide me. Anyone know someone that is experienced with drawing blood from birds?
