Texas

Well it looks like I was blessed with two new chickies after the culling of my two poor roosters. My silver laced Cochin hen was a stubborn broody, and today I met a cute little face today. She still has a few more eggs so we shall see what happens. We lost one already, crushed in it's egg I imagine from the other hens crawling in her nest. I moved her to her own area now that she has chicks to finish hatching in peace.

That there is the very reason it is hard not to give into chicken math.

Aww, what a cutie.

Shoot, I also have a Americanna rooster that I need to get rid of but I'm in the Panhandle between Lubbock and Amarillo. He is beautiful but I have another rooster and my flock is too small

Hey yall
We are getting ready to move at the end of the month

I'm starting over with raising chicks and ducks

Is it too late to get a bunch of baby chicks this year?

We have a nice and big shed that is going to be the coop
And they won't be outside for several weeks until they are feathered out

The coop will have a brooder in it

We live about an hour west from dfw

Depends on what you mean by "too late".

This time of year, you may have difficulty getting the exact kind or number of chicks that you want, but if you aren't too picky, you may be able to get chicks from a hatchery or a local/Southern person that still has some laying going on. With it tending toward molting time and decreasing sunlight, that can cut down on availability if you have specific desires for kinds/number of chicks/preference where you buy from.

As far as whether or not you can raise chicks this time of year - you can raise chicks year round. Depends on your capabilities for brooding chicks as to whether or not it's too late in the year for you specifically to raise them. Texas has such funky weather that there are challenges no matter what time of year you are trying to raise chicks. If you are able to meet the chicks' needs this time of year, then it isn't too late.

Interesting.  Do you do raw, or do you use pasteurization?  Also, do you plan on making feta?

We will do raw this year. I'll be taking a pasteurizing class in the spring. I'm not good with it. I keep over cooking everything that we've had to practice on.

Just had a visit from @belott, David came by and got a tour of the madness that is our property! He got to see all of the improvements in person. Just like you Dan, its been a while since he's seen the place. Improvements take time.

Like I was telling David, we're about to rip down the Southern wall and replace it with T111(?) Siding before the cold hits.

We also undid the green wrapping on the western and northern walls. Wouldn't you know we found two windows and a door hiding in there?
