My girls.

Hello and welcome to BYC. Like your avatar. There is a place a few miles from me that has Longhorns and some of those horns are huge. Also, my brother-in-law lives in Tye and raises miniature Longhorns. We are a few hours south of you just north of Coleman.
hi jtn4248, glad to meet you.

my avatar is a picture I took of one of my senior herd sires. his name is Totem Pole. yep those horns on some LH can get huge. I would think that mini LH would be fun. I know the full sized ones all have different personalities. the breeder of totem pole successfully used line breeding in his herd for 38 years. he had also used line breeding in his commercial cattle all his life. this old timer passed away passed away this spring at the age of 97. the LH world is even smaller than the chicken world.

Hi I am new to BYC and want to get 6-12 adult hens to start with. I would like to know if anyone knows where I could buy some adult RIR's in my area. I'm in Paris TX.
TIA,

I think people do a lot on Craigs list.
Just remember if you get them from different sources to QUARANTINE for about a month.
You might also try contacting your local 4H groups.
Good Luck

Paris, Tx is not too terribly far from Canton, Tx. Have you ever heard of 1st Monday Trades Days. Happens once a month. They have an entire city block dedicated to animals. And chickens are a large part. Be careful, as always, lots of sickness in farmers markets and these types of gatherings. Just look for the healthy, clean vendor stalls. There are always RIR at 1st Monday Trades Days.

If you want REAL Rhode Island Reds and not the reddish-orange birds that come from hatcheries and most backyard keepers, Roy Autrey over in New Boston raises show winning Reds. Here's his website http://www.affpoultry.com/home.html
