I STILL have not caught a snake. Haven't seen one either so that's a good thing.

BAD thing... a coyote sent my ducks flying this evening. It almost got Fred, my avatar. Where were my dogs?? In the carport trying to stay dry. I called them and my G Pyr picked up the scent right away so I turned them loose. That &%*#! coyote had better be in another county now.

I'm seriously getting a hand gun so I can wear it every time I go out. What's the best kind to get?

The best handgun you can get is the one you can shoot well without flinching or closing your eyes when you pull the trigger. Probably a .38 special or a 9mm depending on whether you want a revolver or semiautomatic. Go to a gun store and see what fits your hand. Get instruction from a professional or someone that has much experience handling them and practice. Be safe. And store it properly when not in use. Rifles are easier to shoot but harder to carry.

A semi-auto without a hammer. So much nicer not to have a hammer to get caught on clothing or dig into you depending on where you wear it.

I have a .38s. In a revolver. I prefer a revolver because to me it is simple. Less chance for me to forget a step.

Get a longer barrel, easier to aim and hit at what you are shooting. They also make snake shot for it too. My Taurus also takes a .357 round. Dual purpose.

Get what is comfortable and makes sense for you.

They are just too big to carry with all of the other stuff I'm usually carrying. Ren, if you are just going to shoot this thing on your property the long barrel shouldn't be a concern. I learned with a 9 shot H&R pistol. Talk about a long barrel. I LOVE that gun. Because of the long barrel you can make your shot count. For in town, I carry a .38 special.

I agree with Bluejean55girl on her choice for the same reasons. A revolver feels safer to carry loaded to me, is easy to operate, and for me is easier to be accurate with. Practice with your husbands .22. It will be cheapest and easiest to handle. Once you are familiar with it get something similar(single action, double action, semi-auto) in a larger caliber and a good holster. There are too many options to say what is best for you. A 50 foot shot with a handgun will take practice to be lethal and you really don't want to just wound the animal. Be safe and act responsibly when handling it. ALL guns are loaded(even if you watched someone else check it a minute before), never point it at something you don't want to kill or destroy(this includes anything behind your target), keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on target and ready to fire the weapon. Good luck with that 'yote.

You can't go wrong with a revolver. It is designed to go bang 6 times, it just takes longer to reload. If you go with a semi-auto, a reliable .40 will probably fit bill as an intermediate round that can be handled well. I recommend a Glock, because you can abuse the heck out of them and they still shoot.
