Texas

Got yelled at by the owner of a petting zoo for picking up his chickens. I just wanted to look upon their cute little silkie faces and admire their strange blue earlobes and 5 toes. AND one of them was a blue splash, so I plead temporary insanity due to cuteness overload:barnie
I'm so embarrassed, y'all:confused:

To be fair, a petting zoo environment makes picking up a bird seem like a reasonable action. Hard to pet a chicken on the ground.

Hi, I was told by another member on BYC to post my listing here... so hopefully someone has this breed!

I am looking for Heritage RIRs. I would prefer hatching eggs that can either be shipped or I can meet someone here in Texas. I really want high quality with the deep red coloring. This will be a Christmas present for my new father-in-law! He spent months building his chicken coop and runs to perfection! He had bought some pullets and was told they were going to have the deep red coloring like he remembered having when he was a young boy... well they were commercially raised RIRs and I am not so sure they are even full RIRs and they are very light colored. He was disappointed but he loves them and spoils them anyways! Every time I am over he mentions how badly he wants the dark red RIRs, so I want to surprise him with a hand built brooder/grower box and HERITAGE Rhode Island Red chicks! So who has these red ruby beauties?!?! Thank you so much in advance!

I posted this on Managing Your Flock under "2 unusual winter questions"

2- I know chickens are cold-hardy and develop down to keep them warm in cold climates. However, I am not in a cold climate. I'm in Texas and we have 2 seasons- hot between may-oct and then fallwinterspring (one season lol) where we have weather in the 70s and 80s, get a cold front and drop 30-50 degrees for a few days, and then it warms back up and repeat every few weeks. Last year it literally went from 85* to 35* in 24 hours- we had a 50* drop. Will my chickens adjust to the extreme temp changes? I know bees get confused by the weather.

My coop is not airtight on purpose because I don't want my chickens to die in 100*+ heat. I also have 2 large windows and 2 top vents in the coop. DO I need to wrap my coop in plastic during cold fronts? Cover the windows? Or just pile bedding in there to keep them warm?

and it was suggested I ask here. So fellow Texans, can you help? How do you manage crazy Texas weather and your chickens?
