I know I am old, but I am cold. Am sitting here in my thermal underwear, sweat pants, T shirt house shoes and under a blanket. I raised the house temp a little and opened the cabinets in the bathroom and the kitchen- the cold air from under there is astounding. there is ice all over the ground. The chickens are staying close together in the run, the electric waterer is working great - no ice in there. The dogs are in the house- have to be made to go outside to potty. It is 23 degrees and is expected to be 12 tonight. BRRR. I think I would like to shoot me a groundhog - look out Phil.

At long last here are the photos of the winter hardy Opuntia Cactus (growing in a suburb of Chicago). Obviously they can't be dug up and spend the winter in a basement or garage.

The cactus start dehydrating in late fall. By purging water from the cells, they won't rupture/burst from freezing weather. When spring comes & weather warms up, the early rain fills out the pads to normal proportions. These plants have mainly very irritating spine hairs that can float on air, land on you and propel their spine hairs into your skin. This particular variety only has a few random true spines. But in any case you would not want to grab one bare handed or or lean in to sniff the flowers. Flowers have no fragrance anywa.
