Texas

Our first few years out here, we were overrun with moccasins, rat snakes, rattlers, and copperhead all.

When I moved to where I am now, in the first three months I killed 33 rat snakes and one copperhead. I stopped counting after that. The first few rat snakes I took off and released. But when I stopped getting any eggs and three month old birds were getting killed, half-swallowed, and then coughed up I waged war. The second year there were some, but I wasn't over run. I think the third year I saw three or four rats snakes, two copperheads, and one moccasin. It's why I keep everything mowed super duper short. I can't stand going out and finding two or three in the coop. I remember one night I got two in the original chicken pen. About had a heart attack because it was dark and they were by my face. Dispatched them and needed a breathing treatment. Sat down on the front porch to let the adrenaline chill out and looked up and there was a six footer on a ledge of the ceiling on the porch that is maybe a half inch wide, eating the baby barn swallows out of their nest. I was not pleased. lol

It's sound like some of our experiences here. I've had one rat snake get into a nest box and eat developing eggs. I lifted up the hen, there it was. It almost got me. Another, I bent over to get eggs and it was practically in my face. I have good secure runs, but I leave the doors open so the birds can roam in and out to the chicken yard during the day.
My brother came close to loosing his leg several years ago. He was fishing and a water moccasin repeatedly but him. I will kill moccasins and copperheads on sight. Both are too aggressive to let live in mho. I don't see a lot of rattlers anymore, but that may be because they are more likely to avoid humans.

Im pretty sure it's colder here than that 50 on my weather app. I'm out, with a sweatshirt and jeans, but a coat might be more appropriate. 🥶
Pretty sure I gotta go to coop. Feed gather eggs. It's jeans sweatshirt SLICKER and rubber boots. And maybe thermals

I would just keel over. I came across a leucistic rattler when I was a kid. I don't think I've ever run that fast in my life. It was down by the lake where I grew up. Coiled on a fallen tree buzzing away. I was not happy when I convinced dad to go back down there, and it was gone.
