Are there any places in Austin to buy organic Layer Feed? I can't find it in Boerne and getting it shipped cost me more than the feed. If anyone knows of anything in the San Antonio / Austin area I would love to know about it so I can take a nice drive and save myself $50 in shipping
Here is a list of places that sell organic feed in Texas. Maybe there is one close enough to you. The closest one I found was an hour and a half away. A little too far for me to drive just for chicken feed. I would LOVE if I could get it closer, but Ive called everyone around here and nothing!
You can pick up Coyote Creek Organic feed yourself from their location in Elgin:
Minimum Order For Pick-Up or Shipment From The Mill
Fresh and certified organic bagged and bulk livestock feed can be picked up or shipped from Coyote Creek Organic Feed Mill. The minimum order is 10 bags (50 pound bags) of any one feed or 500 lbs in loose bulk.
The Mill is open Monday Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please call (512) 285-2556 at least two days in advance to place your order. If we are away from the mill office, please leave a message and we will return your call. If we are shipping your feed, please give us at least three days to find the lowest possible shipping cost for your order. The mill is located at 13817 Klaus Lane, Elgin, TX.
Yesterday afternoon, my cockerel somehow got out of his enclosure and got into the backyard, where my roommate's dogs killed him. R.I.P. Henry. So now I don't need to find a home for him. I still have probably about 8 lbs of his feed, though, as well as an almost-new tub of mealworms, an almost-full bottle of Wazine, and his feeder and waterer. He was a young dude and VERY underweight (literally no muscle or fat on his keel) and poor feather quality when I got him, so I had made a concoction of organic layer pellets (I was told he was a pullet, so...), organic scratch, traditional starter feed (with antibiotics in them, in case he had a secondary infection from homelessness and malnutrition), and crushed oyster shell. I know it's a weird combination of foods, but went with it based on conversations with both my vet and the people at Tomlinson's and Buck Moore.
So anyway... if anyone wants any of these things and you live near Austin, let me know and we can arrange a place to meet. I am not planning on getting any more chickens until my roommate and her chicken-killing dogs move out in October, and I can build a larger, more secure enclosure in the backyard, so there's no reason for me to keep any of this stuff for now.
Hey, y'all! I just discovered this Texas-specific thread, and I have seen a few references to a show in Decatur. Can anyone give me some details on this? I've been to a million dog shows in my lifetime, but never a chicken show. It is hard for DH and me to get away from the house together because we have an elderly pot-bellied pig who can't be left alone, but I think a chicken show just might justify a babysitter. Thanks to anyone who can tell me about this!
The Decatur show is Sept 23. It is put on by the Red River Bantam club. The catalog is not out yet. It is usually at the Wise County Sheriff posse arena. I think 5-6 hundred birds is about average.
