Texas

I've caught quite a few 'chicken' snakes/rat snakes with believe it or not........bird netting. Yep!
Several years back my feed store started selling it to chicken owners who were having trouble with snakes getting into the hen house. They even had photos from other customers showing the snakes they'd caught. I got some and IT WORKS!!

It's black plastic (get the kind that has 3/4 to 1 inch openings) netting originally for putting over fruit trees to keep the birds off of the fruit.
The feed store had rolls of about 14' X 20' for about $8. You unroll it, lay it out and then loosely roll or twist it around on itself.....(that way the snake has to go through a bunch of loose layers) ....place it outside of the nest box area or anywhere you believe the snakes are getting in. The snakes will try to crawl through it and end up getting stuck in it.

I put mine down outside of the nest area and forgot about it til one day I went out to gather eggs and found a 3' rat snake all caught up in the netting. I catch several snakes yearly this way.

Several years before I started using the plastic netting I found a dead snake that had gotten stuck in some old twisted chicken wire.
Another thing I do (if eggs go missing) is put old golf balls in the nests. The snake will take the golf ball, but of course can't digest it so it dies. No more egg robbing snake!!

Thanks for taking the time to describe that .. there was a poster on BYC that posted pics of this contraption and one wicked pic of one with a half a dozen snakes in it! LOl .. he has since removed the picture and I couldn't think how to describe what he did to get the snakes ..

You described it beautifully...

Speaking of predators... we saw a coyote out in our horse pasture the other morning. On one hand it was cool seeing it but realized it's one more predator that we'll have to protect our chickens from. I know we have raccoons, possums, skunks, and of course the dogs that our neighbors can't keep in. Are there any predators that tend to dig into enclosures? Should we plan to put wire down to prevent critters from digging in?

Yes .. and if you're in the planning stages now it'll be easier to just do it .. Canines will dig in .. and I've had coons dig in ..

Greetings from Belton Texas!
One hour north of Austin. We have 9 girls, 2 cats, one dalmation. Anyone else having snake problems? I've lost chicks twice now to large ?bullsnake? Advice welcome. Anyone tried snakeaway powder? My one old girl stays broody much of the time. I'd love to give her one more chance with fertilized eggs, but those *#*~ snakes!!

Seeing as how driving to Austin(in a 4x4 truck) uses more gas then I would like to right now. Im not sure when I'll head that way.

Texasgal,

Thank you for finding that photo!!! I'm going to print it out to show friends........I never took any pics of my catches.
Geeze, just looking at it gives me the willys. I thought finding ONE snake hung up was scary, but that pic is REALLY scary!!!

Also, thanks for the new pics of your newly finished home. I found your thread last week and read the whole thing and was hoping you'd update us. (It was kinda like reading a novel and the end of the story wasn't available.) Now we know there is a happy ending. Ending of the building process that is...........now your new house is a HOME, and that story is just beginning.

Thanks again,
Christine

PS I was so sorry to learn you'd lost Shiner. I still pine for Ms. Lincoln and her daughter Beatrice, they were my 2 favorite girls. But I'm glad to read you'll be getting another roo from the same stock. Would you be willing to share where you got him, for us SF lovers?

Thank you ..

Shiner came from Melissa at pasofinofarms .. she is a sometimes poster on BYC .. best to email her. I got eggs from her last year and he was my favorite cockeral .. and became a fabulous roo ... Her birds are clean, pretty, and big .. I love her stock. I have to NOT look at her golden cuckoo marans .. I don't need another breed! lol
