Texas

ok so funny story, dont know if I already posted this or not, sorry if I did but I dont think I did but anyways, oh and wait, we all know I'm not from Texas, right? I posted that before, I just like Texas and wanted to post, you can go back a few pages and find my posts/the conversation(s) if you want but any way back to the story, ok so here it goes: as I may have mentioned before, my dad went on a cross country road trip with some of his friends years ago, like when he was in college I think so anyways he told me this story a few weeks ago at breakfast because my brother put hot sauce on his food and they had a green pepper hot sauce which my dad says is really hot but anyways apparently on his road trip there was this little cafe/resteraunt thing on some back road in Texas so they had nachos there and they asked if he wanted red or green salsa on them so thinking green=cooler, its green so it must be less hot, he said green, so he got them and took like one bite and it was really, really hot but of course he had to eat it so he was like eating it and he was like crying cause it was so hot, like it made his eyes water but he had to eat it so he did but he said he couldnt taste anything for like a whole day or week after or something, it was awful, but I personally think its hilarious., haha...

Greetings from Belton Texas!
One hour north of Austin. We have 9 girls, 2 cats, one dalmation. Anyone else having snake problems? I've lost chicks twice now to large ?bullsnake? Advice welcome. Anyone tried snakeaway powder? My one old girl stays broody much of the time. I'd love to give her one more chance with fertilized eggs, but those *#*~ snakes!!

I think I have had it all in the last year or so. First I lost most of my flock to something, never did figure it out, it was taking whole birds at night sometimes more than one, so was probably more than one critter. So then when I tried to start over I had this really smart and huge coon figure out how to get into the small fish tank where I was keeping my chicks, it got them all one night and was very bold came back twice in one night after I had seen it and chased it off. I usually know if its a possom too because they just tear the poor babies up trying to get them out of the cage and just leave the wings usually, have lost many over the last few years and a few just lately. But the thing that got me I think the worst was the snake. I (read- my husband and dad) have killed a couple this year and we usually get a few every year, mostly "chicken snakes" which are actually rat snakes. Usually the snakes just get the eggs like yall said but the other night I got a shock. I have/had five one month old chicks in a cage on the ground, I put them up after dark but they are usually fine till then. Well I went out just after dark the other night and almost fainted. There was a snake in with the chicks, I ran and got my husband and he killed it, it couldn't get away because...it had already swallowed two of the chicks. I couldn't believe it. The thing was about four foot long and two or three inches around except where the chicks were located, about half way down its body. I really couldn't believe this, I know snakes can eat big stuff in comparason to themselves but this was an eye opener for sure. I have never tried any kind fo repelant, we just try to outsmart them or kill them when we see them but I have heard that moth balls work, there is something in them that the snakes don't like. Has anyone else heard this? There has been a lot of deforestation next to us and around us in the last few years and we have really noticed a difference in the number of preditors in our yard, probably displassed from the forest. Its not always wildlife though. For years now we have had problems with dogs, people think it is okay to just let them out or let them run loose, this is fine on your own property but not if they visit the neighbors. My dad lost most of his geese to what we think is a very sneeky dog this spring. Anyway, as you can see I have a real preditor problem and it is really getting to me. All I want is to keep a few chickens alive for more than a month or two.

Guess my new coop will have to be a fort to do this. (sorry to rant)
