Awwwwwwww .. he's very cute .. I'm kinda Marans ignorant but how do you know it's a roo? Are they color sexed or something?

they can be color sexed once they start to develop their feathers. the roos will have a black strip on the wings while the hens stay a wheaten brown color.

Shiner was a dream. I've been told that Salmon Fav roos are like that. He was such a gentleman to the girls .. waited for them to mature, never pressing them. Rarely bred them in front of me. Watched over them like a good rooster should, encouraging them while they were in the box. He was not an obsessive crower and was gentle to pick up and handle.

He did run at me a couple of times .. never making contact .. and I just turned around the made him walk away from me about 50 yards and that was the end of that.

He was killed last week by a coon who got into their chainlink run. I miss him terribly.

I did contact the breeder I got him from and have ordered a "replacement" .. Who will be Shiner II. The tradition must continue.

If you post this on the Marans thread I bet they'd take him off your hands quick. I'd love to have a Wheaton but alas am currently barred from any new chickens.
