So, I have been trying out different breeds in hopes of finding one to stick with. I just found out that on top of Clarets being in the family for many, many years [my flock, for instance, is 9 generations old on my mothers side]... that my Great Grandfather on my fathers side had Silver Spangled Hamburgs that had been passed on to him from previous generations. I am now searching for any information I can on the breed. The pictures I found had some GORGEOUS birds in it, and I googled them. They're beautiful. Any Texans have any ideas on the general upkeep on the breed? Confinement or free range?
I have ordered a few from Ideal, just to get me started out, and I will get them on the first week or so of march. Are the roosters like game birds in the fact that they will need to be separated? How hard is it to get their stock to a good breeding standard? My father has one rooster with him in Laredo and I'm planning on sending him some of the hens once they're closer to mature enough birds the rooster will accept them.
Also, I have some extra roosters [7 Production Reds, 2 RIR, 1 SLW, 1 Buff Orp] if anyone wants them. Otherwise, they'll be in my freezer by this weekend. They're terrorizing my layer girls with their crazy teenaged horomones. I'm going to keep one of the PR boys to put with the ladies I have for him.
